Down the hole!

If you are out on Clearwtar lake and hear a strange muffled ringing noise, don't worry its probably just my mobile phone. It was in the front pocket, bent over my hole and ploop! The best part is I could see it drop on the Vexilar. I'm sure I'm not the first guy to lose something important down the hole, let me hear your stories, so I can feel a little better about myself for being careless. It wasn't a total loss though, we came home with 4 eyes.

On a recent laker ice fishing trip off the Gunflint Trail in Minnesota, we lost two full cans of pop, a Teflon Jiffy slush spoon (didn't work for dump anyway) and a two-way radio down the holes in the sleeper/portable. The sleeping areas were benches above and beside the holes, and that's where we kept some gear, too. Guess we should have kept the hole covers on when not in use, eh?

I kicked a new leatherman tool down the hole last winter.

I am a SCUBA diver and I dive Lake Minnetonka pretty much every Sunday in the summer. Last year on reef in Wayzata bay I brought up 5 ice scoups in one dive. Other odd things our group has found include, wedding rings, lots of boat anchors, fishing rods, a cast iron bath tub, more lures then you can imagine, a full size box fan, chairs, and also lots of old car jacks. I guess these were from guys that jacked up fish houses and then lost them in the snow.

Dropped a mag light down the hole on Ann Lake in Wright county a couple years ago. It stayed on for hours. Good flashlight. Also lost a pole to the portable on Mille Lacs this year. 7/8" aluminum poles are hard to come by these days. Sound like a good excuse too get a new portable nxt year.

Last week our group of five made our once a year trip to Big Winni. We were fishing in one of Nodak's permanents and I was using a wrist saver rod and arctic reel I recently bought from fishing MN. I liked it! The perch were a little slow that morning but we had already caught a 27 1/2" walleye, two northern 31" and 27" and a 32" eelpout. I had to go outside to relieve myself, thought about those larger fish and put the leg of my chair between the line and the rod with the reel against the back of the chair leg. As I came back in, I saw the chair slide across the floor and bounce over the boards framing the hole and my rod and reel go down the hole. I saved the chair!!! I would have liked to see the fish. Guess there will be more business coming up for shipping MN. We reeled up before making later trips outside.

Several years back, when Red Lake was open for walleye's my fishing partner and I were trolling. He was up front on my platform in a white plastic deck type chair. A wave from another motorboat caught us offguard and "poof"...over backwards he went with the chair and rod. He came up hacking up water and had lost his glasses too. If you see a walleye on Red Lake wearing glasses they could be his. They are prescription sunglasses.

A couple of years back my family and I went to Upper Red to fish the crappies. We stayed until after dark. I used a 2 cell mag light to check bobbers since I didn't have a lantern. While re-baiting my hook, the light slipped off from my leg where it was balanced and went straight down the hole. It didn't even clatter on the ice before going down or anything. It hit the bottom of the lake, batteries down of course and lit up the entire bottom of the ice where our fish house was sitting. We tried to scoop it up but could not. The fish stopped biting in that area and we decided to leave for the evening anyway. When we drove away, there was a huge glowing spot on the ice. grin.gif

Had a guy and his younger son out on MilleLacs today. All of a sudden his son comes running over and says his dad lost a pole down the hole. Yep!!! Had a bite on one pole and while his was busy with that a fish hit his other one and pulled it down the hole. He DOVE for it, but all he received for his efforts were a wet arm all the way up to the shoulder. smile.gif

2 winters ago 4 of us were on millacs at Brandts, After a long day of drinking, no fish and cards and dice, we all decided to go to bed. I looked at my buddy who had a snoot-full on all fours with his arm down one of his holes, "what the hell you doing?" he said " I think I dropped my glasses under the ice house!" "or maybe down the hole" It didn't take long for him to go sleepy!!

That's similar to my story a few years back.My daughter and I left the shack to check a tip-up and I heard the unmistakable sound of the jig-pole being pulled down the hole.It was gone, but the spring of that year I was out fishing panfish early in the boat and saw a bobber floating in the water.Went up close and it was my bobber from the jig pole.Sure enough,I pulled up the rod.True story.I used that jig pole today.Crazy stuff.Later.

I lost my glasses during the open season once off the end of my freind's uncle's dock. We searched the water throughly at the end of the dock, even swimming down to the end. I also dragged a net along the bottom there. Nothing. They were never found. Maybe a big bass came by and took em wink.gif I never knew bass needed glasses...

Hey Setterguy, That story brought back a memory. In my younger days I used to fish out of a permanant shack. One time a buddy and I decided to do a little all night fishing. After some lengthy debate as on what to bring for beverages he went with beer, I decided on Bacardi and coke. Well Bacardi came in this nice sleek bottle. Once we got all set up he cracked his beer, and I mixed a nice Bacardi coke. When I went to put the bottle on the shelf I dropped it, a perfect bullseye right down the hole. It was full so it sank but not before I could get my hands on it, well that sleek little bottle just slipped out of my hand. I would get it half way up the hole and down it would go. This happened 4 times. Finally I couldn't reach it anymore and all I could do is watch slooowly sink out of sight. When I turned to get the drink I had just mixed there it was tipped over on the floor. The worst part was begging a beer off my buddy who just sat there and laughed. Oh well he got drunk I caught fish, I think Bacardi is a good fish attractant.

Was out on Swenson lake near Wilmar Saturday with my father-in-law and brother-in-law. I had a pole set up with a slip bobber and a large shiner. I had the pole sticking into the slush with the bail open. So imagine my surprise when I watched from 20' away my pole go flying down the hole. My bro-in-law made a run for it but was not in time. I said to him that I couldn't understand how that happened because I always flip the bail. Thats when he tells me that he had checked my minnow and had forgotten to flip the bail earlier....I just said "those things happen." Which is not what I wanted to say at all.

And yes...A Vexilar can fit down a 10" hole.

I seen a Vex slip into a 10" hole in 40' of water on some sloppy ice late last winter. A guy was hole hopping, set it down, reached for a minnow, and SPLOOSH, the Vex slid in.

Man it sunk fast, like a rock!

Sure glad it was not ME!

I am extra cautious near 10" holes now after seeing that...man what a bummer!

2 cell phones @ $250/piece
8" Lazer auger head
Radios
Leatherman
Fillet knife
Clamp on rattle reel

The list goes on because in the end, everything finds a way down the hole for me!

Although, the Angel Eye spoon recovered, or assisted to retrieve the auger head, fillet knife and the rattle reel! wink.gif
