Portable Licenses

I am hearing chatter about not needing licenses anymore for portables based on some legal changes. Can any confirm this?

If you leave your house unattended it still needs to be licensed.

i thought on portables all they needed was the DNR Number, and for something left over night unattended you needed name and address

How do you get a DNR number without buying the permit?

It's on your fishing license.

Oh, thought it was an Ice House specific number, my bad. Any restrictions on the size/lettering of it? Just use the same stickers you use on your boat?

every person thats ever bought a license for fishing, or hunting has a DNR number. I put that number on my house.

Here's straight from the 2007 Regs regarding the size of the numbers:

- All shelters, which include dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the (1)complete name and address, (2)driver’s license number, or (3)the nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height.

You only need a shelter tag if its left on the lake overnight,which would mean if you went out at 9pm,caught a mess of crappies,and left at 6am,you would have to have a tag,right? Oh,and the new laws are NOT in the 2007 reg book,it was effective after printed it was printed,as I read in the Pioneer Press

No! Only if left unattended. If you are in your portable no license is needed.

I can't imagine there are alot of people that would leave their portable on the ice overnight anyway..

A shelter does not have to be out over night to be unattended. Think of it as your 2nd pole for ice fishing. How far away away does it have to be to be unattended I wonder?

Does anyone know if a non-resident needs a license for a portable?

Non-resident's don't need the license either. I emailed MN DNR and that's what they told me.
