The buck growler By MAD calls

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine used it 2 weeks ago to call in a huge buck. He said it came running in and it stood behind a tree.

I bought one but it has not worked yet for me. I used it while at camp Ripley last week.

this is my take on it. I was out last night walking around with my camera in the city limits so no hunting. I got about 10 yards from a doe and then noticed a big buck behind her and I mean big, I did a few grunts then that growl sound of the buck growl and he looked at me and started to walk away. He really was not interested in the call at all. I like how the grunt sounds from it. I have yet to have a buck react to the growl but I'm guessing the buck has to be pretty dominant to be aggresive to the call, but I think it could work on any buck. given the right conditions, I think that its place is in the thick of the rut, right before bredding phase is in swing, right when the first doe is in estrous.

I used mine (grunted, haven't growled yet) for the first time on Saturday night. I had a doe and fawn near me so I thought I would grunt to see the reaction. A couple minutes later three bucks came in. I am a bit nervous to try the growl yet, I think in peak rut it would be good, but from the video it seems to work.

I also bought this call last year and like the grunt it produces and not sure of the growl yet but I'm goig to try it I got a dvd with my call and the guy how designed it said that you should use it in the thick of the rut. I hope it works. acording to the video it brings them in running.

I purchased this call just the other night...love the grunt sound too...

Caution on watching that video though... I would say that almost all of the footage on that video is coming from some sort of outfitter's land where the herd has been micromanaged, so the buck to doe ratio is healthy and there is competition for breeding rights, so every buck in the area comes running for one hot doe.... so...I'm not sold on this growl thing yet, but I'll give it a try this weekend as the rut starts to ramp up. In the area I am in, the balance of the population is so out of whack that I would be surprised to see any bucks come running to the growl, but if it happens, I'll certainly be sold on it, and I will come back and report it here.

I have the call and really like it. I havent growled yet but have grunted and called in a couple bucks in right to me and plan to start growlin this weekend. What was said about drury's i dont think they are on an outfitters land. They have alot of there own farms that they hunt all over like in iowa and missouri. I think that you are right about there herd being managed though but that is because they have done it them selves. I say good for them to get there herd in balance and i am trying to do the same. I would say maybe start doin some trigger finger management and calls and scents will start working better. Also on the video they arent the only ones to hear the growl another guy did and had bucks come from everywhere. I herd a growl last year but hadnt bought the call yet. But i think if you have the right circumstances the call will work great for you.

it depends what kind of hunter you are. if your out there just trying to get a deer i probably wouldn't use it...i have growled smaller bucks and does in but they hang up out of range...they were just curious and wanted to sneak a peek at the big buck doing the growling but didn't want anything to do with it lol.

if your a hunter that likes to pass on smaller bucks and waits for a nice shooter then i'd use it...i use the rattle, snort wheeze, growl, combo..when your out there for long days trying to get that slammer buck what do you have to lose...i can't count the times i've rattled and snorted big bucks in..the growl is just another angle that adds to the realistic sound of a real fight. just the grunt alone on the call is real nice.

here's an example of what i do during prime time like now and the next couple weeks....like today since things have just started pickin up i sit in my stand until about 8:30 -9am and just let things be natural and see what i see...then i'd just do a couple normal grunts and wait 10 minutes or so...if i don't hear or see anything i give out a couple deep long grunts, snort wheeze, rattle like a maniac, snort, then a growl.

if u never tried it or it hasn't worked for you you'll wonder if u just scared every deer in the area...sometimes you might...but when u stop and hear leaves getting trampled and a big buck stops right in front of you all bulked out and his hair standing on end you'll know u just tricked a mature buck into thinking there was a real fight. if it only happens that 1 time you'll always have the confidence that it does work...but the more u do it the more you'll see that the agressive tactics is the way to go for big bucks.

watch the videos and practice in your living room...make a real fight scene lol....your gf's and wives will love you for it grin.gif
