Recommended Posts

hello guys well i am going to buy a new flip over house in a month or two and I think I have narrowed it to the frabill magnum 2-3 man house or a otter fish house 2-3 man I think the otter you can get a bench seat so that I think is what I like but I have always had frabill and I like the quality. What one would you guys pick?

I picked Otter... with bench seat... but I have only had it one year so far, the Cabin, but so far so good. I am also sort of a rookie to the ice. Good luck with either, they are both nice.

Snake River King,

If you are interested, there is a good way to purchase Otter products, if available.

Call Mandy Hecker at the Otter office Click Here - Otter Outdoors to go to their site, then the contact us button and look for Mandy). Ask her about any specials they might have on their products. You may have to go pick it up from the factory (near Monticello) but you save big $$. Worth it for you to check out anyway. Just thought I would add that.

Good luck this winter!

Hey, I will say for the Frabill.

I own the 3-man and truly love it, seems to be alittle heavy for 1 to drag, but the room is unmatched.

I prefer the 3 single buckets, compared to the bench, it allows for more choices if you are only fishing with 1 or 2 people. I do have alot of equipment to bring with and I would not like anything smaller.

Hoggs,

I know that Hansen has modified his one man otter. Look back under the archives under modification and you can find pictures. Or, I'm willing to bet that you'll see some Otter modifications at the Get-Together this Saturday at Thorne Bros.

SRK,

I have both the Magnum Lodge and the Small Den. The Magnum Lodge is a giant two man, and the Small Den is a go anywhere one man. Like it was stated previously, they are the toughest houses out there. They are not fancy, but I personally like things that can last 20 years versus the latest and greatest. I am pretty sure I can get 20 years out of any Otter if I so choose.

I think you should go wit the frabill, if you like the otter sleds you will like the new frabill ones. They have a storage for your rods in the grooves of the sled. I have one and it's awesome. A couple less rod bags that you have to pack and I really like the individual seats over the bench seats. My opinion

While I think the Glide Trax rod storage is a neat idea, I don't think its that functional. Yes. It does give you a place to store your rods but everytime you need a rod, you have to dig down to them. My portable tub is usually full of stuff- propane heater, propane tank, minnow bucket, cooler, flasher, tackle bag, auger, etc. Some guys even bring more stuff with them- underwater camera, reel weeds, etc. You have to unload or move all this stuff to get at your rods in the bottom of the sled, not very efficient IMO.

Otter has individual seats, bench seats, or no seats. You have the option. wink.gif

Now I have a Otter Med... I love it!! I can go by my self and pull auger, heater, all gear in one sled. I will upgrade to double wide otter skin or village someday, but my Med. works great.

It folds up nice! I keep both batteries in sled and charge when unit is on floor or in truck!

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
