Spinnerbaits

Two brands I use the most are the el-cheapo Reed Runners that can be had for $2 and then I "customize" with different blades/skirts, etc. and War Eagle. There are a few KVD Strike King baits in my box but not as many as the others. I prefer the ones with the twisted eye as I throw them with a snap swivel - I think it gives of more vibration that way.

Yea ok weather wasn’t really the right word to use.. But what i meant was to me choosing the right style of blade is just as important as color... When im fishing dark or stained water i want to fish a spinner bait with a Colorado blade on it, because it gives off more vibration then a willow leaf. The vibration will help the fish find it faster and that’s how fish in dark, green, or stained water feed, by feel not as much as sight.

But when if fishing Clear water i want to use a willow leaf because it give off more flash, And fish in clear water can see a lot better and they are feeding off more reaction and sight then vibration.

Yes, Sluggo picking a color that is close to what the fish are feeding on will also help a lot. That’s my .02 I’m not saying its right but that’s what I think and how I pick my spinner baits by.

War Eagle-- hands down.

Too many variables to narrow spinnerbaits down to just a few. Water color, sky, forrage base and size, etc etc. But usually you can catch fish on white/nickel and white-charturese/nickel. Colorado for stained, willow for clear.

Well here is my take on using trailer hooks. i use them as often as i can. i think we don't realize how many fish we are missing until we put them on. If you think about it a fish can short strike your lure 100 times and you might feel it twice. they don't have to hit your lure at all to short strike. If you ever watch a fish chase another fish they get right behind them without ever even touching them and i bet we have all seen follows too. This stinger/trailer can often hook just a follower that never intended to bite but just ventured too close. I use mustad personally and i also sharpen the doom out of them so that if they even knick some flesh they will penatrate. My take on trailer hooks. ike

I agree with you alot about the trailer hook. There is alot of times that i have caught alot of fish on the trailer hook. They are somethign that alot of people dont use. I use them alot as well, but when im in alot of cover, i dont like to use them becuase they will get caught up on other things.

wow, you said 'alot' alot grin.gif

i almost exclusively use a willowleaf/colorado tandem. i have caught bass during the greenest of iowa's algea blooms and in the clearest california canyon resivours on the same white w/c tandem el-cheapo spinnerbait. i feel that a straight up colorado is great for colder water when the fish are a little less active and you need to slow it down, sometimes the willow is too fast. if i could spend the cash to stock the box with spinnerbaits, i like the terminator titaniums. what a great lure for boobs like me, just toss em out and bring em back in. hard to snag em and get good hook ups. and you can fish fast for the ADD in me cool.gif

oh ok i understand, as far as sizes go for trailers, keep it around the same size hook thats mounted already? is that a general rule?

When I'm tossing buzzers or blades during a tournament I always put a trailer on, if the water I'm fishing will allow it. During fun fishing or pre-fishing no trailer. During pre-fishing I will "cork" the hook. I use the same hook guards that come on most baits from the retail outlets to cork it. Works great, you can actually work most fish in close enough to get a size estimate on them.

I like heavy cover spinner baits because I can get on the HSOforum and design exactly what I want. Colors are great, size and shapes are great, lots of different weights.

A little pricey but I've been buying 4 or 5 a year and even loosing a few am slowly building a good collection.

I'll stick with this until I get a stab at stealin KVD's spinner bait box. hee, hee

Yah, he uses standard Stike King, sure...

Hey, are these Chatterbaits spinner baits, they work pretty good! I'm gonna try some of these Gamblers with the weedguard this year.

Hey I'll show ya the neatsest bait if the site let's me.

Stay tuned for a swimbait post.

I'm a big fan of Flaminn Lures spinnerbaits, and have bought several at Northwest Sportshow over the years (I think Thorne Bros carries some of his safety-pin style). They are built well(he will build them custom on the spot at the show, or mail order)with great color, and also have the best finish I have ever seen. Handmade. Now, I don't know if the fish really care (i.e., cheap spinnerbaits do work), but they are a great product at a fair price.

I also love the Lunker Lures Triple Rattleback Vibraton Spinnerbait tongue.gif . The blade they use on this spinner bait is quite unique, and I feel that the different sound profile it creates accounts for the success that I have with it.

Yup. I'm a big fan of his buzzbaits as well. My go-to favorite is a 1/2 oz.,purple/black, with purple counter-rotating inline blades. If the water is green, this one get's them everytime.
