cjac
Magic number seemed to be at 11 feet deep, throwing parallel to the weedline. Most were from edges with a bit of a shallower flat on top, but not deep water close by. Crazy day, On the way there, going East into the sun in the AM, I just about smashed up the rig as traffic came to a stop on the freeway. There was a gaggle of turkeys in the middle of 694! On the lake we had a lone female loon that would not leave us alone! We had to move to get away from her, but I'll say this, at first glance a loon chasing your lure looks like a muskie that's about a foot wide across the back moving at 50 miles per hour. MJBo
The loons have been INSANE! Twice on WBL and once on Forest in the past two weeks. WHat the heck? i'm having to move spots. Never seen anything like it. Last saturday I had a soft shelled turtle chase a DDD in from the depths as a rabid loon circled my boat waiting for me to load up and cast again. RuKiddingMe
We had a Grebe doing that to us a few weeks ago on Forest, scared the bejeezes out of me the first time I seen it. Man they can swim fast, and the profile underwater is really something. The Grebe definitely pushed us off our spot.I did hook a Grebe a few year back drifting for Walleyes with a lindy rig. I'll tell ya that created some serious excitement in the boat until the Grebe surfaced 25 feet away and my line running straight to his mouth.RU
copterjohn
The Red-Throated loons seem to be much more curious and if there is one near the boat, it will follow you around and chase lures as if it is just having some fun. I have not had the common loon do this. Are the ones you folks are seeing look like this? http://farm1.static.flickr.com/168/437045333_c2040f14cc.jpg?v=
MJBo
Yup. Thats the crazy little mother. What is it. Some chucklehead told me they were just a regional variation of loon.
cjac
Yep, that would be the culprit. I'm glad they think it's fun, I was scared that someone was going to call me in for harrassment of an endangered species. Seriously, wanted no part of that, so we bailed off a spot that was holding fish. We had a follow, kinda lazy one that wasn't nose on but didn't totally bail out either, and sure enough after a couple 8s here comes the kamakazie loon at full speed! Felt like I was at the zoo or something, one swimming right under the boat is pretty cool looking. Chris
