ds
If I am correct I do not need a passport to travel back to the US from Canada unless I am traveling by air until 2008. Can somebody confirm this for me please. I really don't want to spent $97.00 for a one day trip on a passport.

spudhauler
Is a state issued drivers license all that is required? Or do you need more than that such as a birth certificate also?
dirtking
your drivers license will do just fine
King Canada
You better take a Birth Certificate. Getting in to Canada is pretty easy if you don't have a DWI. Getting back accross the border is the problem. If you don't have a birth certificate you may be stuck there.
MuskyBrian
Nothing wrong with being safe by bringing your birth certificate but in over 25 trips to Canada the next time I am asked for it will be the first time, on either side of the border. fishyguy
Like Musky stated, I have never been asked for my birth certificate either but the regs do state you need it (if I am not mistaken). I always bring mine just in case.
marine_man
I've been to Canada 4 times in the past year and everytime I crossed the border (both the US and the Canadian side) they've asked for a drivers license and a birth certificate (or a passport is fine). 3 of these times I crossed in Pembina, ND and once at International Falls....marine_man
cedarnarrowsguy
I would have to agree with King...I won't mind not getting back into the US. I've never been asked for a birth cert. but I read somewhere you need to have 2 forms of ID.
Wild Thing
Amazing this stuff keeps coming up!I crossed 17 times in 2006, both in Baudette and I-falls and have NEVER been asked for a birth certificate. Valid drivers license is fine. If you bring kids, bring birth certificates. Also be prepared for an effort to reach their parent(s), so a signed letter is nice to have if both parents aren't along. The U.S. requirement of a passport to get back into the US (not into canada!) has been delayed by Congress until Jan, 2009 and likely will be abandoned for a plan to include place of birth on drivers licenses. ENJOY!
marine_man
To be on the safe side I'd bring a birth certificate. I must look like a criminal since they keep asking me for one marine_man
