Here is an article I found on the Fish Ontario HSOforum of a 70 inch northern being caught. Supposedly they ate the manitoba record but I think its a hoax!!!! How about you?

No Toby, that's the real deal. I remember seeing the story and a long disussion about it last year.

I'm pretty sure that a record was the last thing on that families minds.

Sure is a monster though.

I wonder how much money one of the main lure manufactures like mepps or eppinger would have given him for the fish if he said that he caught it with there lure? hmmm... feed the family of 8 for a few days or 5 years???? life is full of big choices.

If that fish is 70", the guys four fingers together would have to be 6.5" inches wide! The guy would also have to have some huge kids and he would have to go about 8' tall himself. I never weigh in on these discussions because there is no way to prove it, but give me a break! There is no way that fish is over 50" anyhow!

If that fish is 70", the Timberwolves better find this guy and his family to make up their starting line-up for next season. That would be a bigger story than a record fish. "A 6' tall 8-year-old Asian kid and his 8' tall father. Tonight on FOX 9 News!"

I estimated that the fish is as long as 11 of his hands (just counting the 4 fingers showing)

That would have to make his 4 fingers just a little over 6 inches wide for the fish to be 70 inches. He is wearing gloves so you can had a little bit for that. Just looking at my hands which aren't huge I would say if I were wearing a pair of gloves my hand would be just shy of 6 inches wide.

I wouldn't say its a full 70 inches but I do think its over 60.

if i remember right it was decieded not to be 70 inches by lookin at the studs in the shack - if you read the story he never even had a tape on it it was the paper that gave it a number...... got to love the media -

They aren't doing anything illegal by eating a fish of that size. Its a cultural difference that we don't have any right to criticize. If they catch a fish legally they can do what ever they want with it. These people are just looking for meal and they can't understand why you would go out a fish all day just to throw perfectly good fish back in the water.

I think we all need to be more understanding.

For the last five years I've taken a week to fish on Cross Bay in Manitoba, which is connected to Cedar Lake.

The first year we went up there we were talking to Fred Hobbs, who is the owner of the cabins/campground that we stay at.

This fish came up in our conversation and his exact words about it were "I saw this fish and it was no hoax." I have no reason not to believe him.

He also told us the the fish wasn't caught on hook and line, but it was netted out.

One of the owners of another resort on the lake told me that one guy came up there with a huge boat and all the latest electronics. He claimed that he marked some fish that were over 5 feet long in the deepest parts of the lake, which is about 60 feet.

But I have a hard time believing that since the biggest northern caught on Cross Bay according to the Master Angler Program is 49".

Amen to that!

Yeah, he didn't get the endorsements, the glory of an official manitoba record, the stretch limo loaded with sports illustrated bikini models...

But what I do see is a man sharing a happy moment with his family. Don't see anything wrong with that. Plus, think of the fish stories he can tell his grandkids (without having to exaggerate, like most of us wink.gif)!

Ozzie,

My bad... I didn't read the article, just the caption under the picture! blush.gif And yes, they did look Asian to me in the picture before I read they are Native American.

This guy didn't do anything wrong. He's not even looking for credit that he caught it. He was fishing for food and he found it, a lot of it. God bless him.

All I was saying is that there is NO WAY that fish is 70"!!! I'm not saying that he's trying to cheat on anything just that that fish isn't even close to 70".

The fish is the closest thing to the camera so it is going to look bigger. Much bigger than the kids anyway. Even if you ignore that little fact, and the fact that the guy would have to have hands two times bigger than Andre the Giant, there is no way that fish is 70". If the kid on the far left was to stand up I bet the fish isn't any longer than he is tall. Unless there is a 6' tall 1st grader up there I'm not buying it! I will never buy it.

Everyone blows these things so far out of proportion. I wasn't saying anything bad about the guy that caught it, his family, or what he did with it. It's a beautiful fish that I would give anything to catch and I'm happy for the guy and his family for catching it.

All I'm saying is look at the facts. There is no way it is 70"! I'm 6' tall and with gloves on my four fingers are about 4" wide. The fish is 11-12 of the guys hand widths. That would put it somewhere in the 44"-48" range. I think it was a slow news day in Manitoba.

It also confirms my point by the fact that someone said a cabin/campground owner saw the fish. Are kidding me!! Anyone that has ever fished, much less owned a resort on the lake, would have bought that guy and his family food for a year in exchange for that fish! If that was 70" it would be worth well over $1,000,000 in endorsements and trade show appearances alone.

I can hear that conversation now. "Wow man. You just caught a Northern that's bigger than Louis Sprays world record Musky. Bon appetite!"

To me its the legal equivelent of eating a bald eagle.

Did you mean moral equivalent? It's not legal to kill and eat a bald eagle. It is legal to kill eat a large fish. That's fine, of course you're entitled to your opinion. There are also people who don't view hooking a fish in its jaw and dragging it through the water just to throw it back as a noble enterprise. There are some people who would throw their body across your trailer to stop you from "torturing" fish. Not saying that's my opinion, 'cause like everyone else here, I enjoy fish for sport and keep one or two small ones for eating, now and then. You gotta realize that this guy is in an isolated aboriginal community. He probably doesn't discuss the finer points of sport angling with fellow fisherman who are all well read and intimately familiar with all the angling by-laws. We're lucky here. In this FM community here we get to communicate ideas and educate each other on how to catch fish, fishing and boating etiquette, as well as learn about voluntary options like catch and release. Some people don't know how to to properly support the weight of a big musky, but I'm not going to get mad at them if no one taught them. I'm sure he didn't know that he could've racked up endorsements (if he did, he would've probably sold the fish and bought steaks for his family for a month), and he wasn't about to throw back something that could feed his family. He's just a regular joe who went fishing for food, and caught an extra-big fish.

This cabin/campground owner is the kind of person that really doesn't care about the money. He only rents out three cabins and they are always filled. If he was interested in money he'd put up about 20 of them and they'd be filled all the time. He lives by the lake year round and he just loves fishing and bear hunting. He's got everything he wants. There are some people out there who are just satisfied with what they have and they wouldn't take a million bucks if it would change their life.

Same here, we pulled a 46"er out of there a couple years ago.

Good work Treno. I hope I never see a photo like this of an 80lb musky. Similar to the situation a few year back with the Asian American that chowed down on the state record bass. Those guys need to get put in check right now.

What difference is eating a state record fish than having it end up on a wall?

Sorry-clarification:

To me it is a legal act which is the moral equivelent of eating a bald eagle. Of-course I can't and have no desire to impose my value system on someone who doesn't choose to share it. Just makes me a little sad is all....
