PeteA34
I think they are on every lake now....Waconia is loaded with them. If they can do what they think they did to Leech Lake, then these smaller lakes don't have a chance! I bet there is a thousand of them on Coney Island on lake Waconia. Murdock
I was a lake near Spicer this past weekend and they were everywhere. I stood on the end of the dock and watched 6 cormorants cruise a weedline, diving and coming to the surface with multiple fish. There really needs to be some control on these birds before people start taking the control into their own hands.
lots of luck
Pete,We had this thread going last year also. I personally commented on Waconia last year. I agree with you there sure are a lot of Cormo-rats on Coney. I bet they enjoying eating all those DNR stocked walleyes also.Notice also all the cormorant shat on the trees? Wait till the leaves really come, then you can witness that mess also.
cold one sd
The avarian flu will probably take care of them and us this year.
brian6715
They sure have done a number on the Cannon/Wells chain in rice county to.
MSchmillen
Half the trees on Coney are dead from those sky-carp.
AQUAJOE
Can you Shoot them? Maybe they need to be added to the small game license. Does anybody do anything about them??
gunflint
I'm sure alot of people are doing something about them. They just can't talk about it because they're protected.
ScottND
Guess I'm not the only one noticing them. Another Cormorant post Where can we voice our opinion where it will do some good?Congressmen? Governors?
icehousebob
If a guy was arrested in Minn. or the Dakotas for busting caps on those critters, do you think there would be a jury anywhere that would convict him? They probably would carry him out of court on their shoulders and buy him more ammo. Unfortunately, its a federal rather than state offence. I think a three lb coffee can full of pea gravel and a quarter stick in the roost would be the ticket. Kinda noisy, but so are they.
Keith_MN
I noticed this morning that the cormorants have taken up their roosts in the dead trees along the ponds just off the freeway in Albertville. Man, those birds are ugly. Not only are they ugly, but their [PoorWordUsage] kills everything it touches and it stinks to high heaven.
ScottND
After skimming some articles it looks like they had the opportunity to control some of these pests. What I found amusing was they had to use BB Guns . They are trying to get/or got permission to use silenced 22's. Here's some links to follow: Environmental Assessment Reducing Cormorant damage in MN Regulations Not sure what agency it was that I saw yet but it sounds like if you have a problem they are willing to listen. I'll find more later.
Mistermojo
Quote: Public Resource Depredation Order (PRDO): The purpose of this order is to reducethe actual occurrence, and/or minimize the risk, of adverse impacts of DCCOs to publicresources. Public resources include fish (both free-swimming fish and stock at Federal,State, and Tribal hatcheries that are intended for release in public waters), wildlife, plants, and their habitats. It authorizes WS, State fish and wildlife agencies, andFederally-recognized Tribes to control DCCOs, without a Federal permit, in 24 States(AL, AR, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NY, NC, OH, OK, SC,TN, TX, VT, WV, and WI). It authorizes control on “all lands and freshwaters.” Thisincludes private lands, but landowner permission is required. It protects “publicresources,” which are natural resources managed and conserved by public agencies, asopposed to private individuals. To me, it sounds like the states and tribes have some discretion as how to control these nuisance critters... Hopefully that is the case and action can be taken sooner than later. Willy
I know how to control them. Open a season on the ugly things. I guarantee many a fisherman and hunter would be lining up to kill those worthless bass tards.
LocalGuide
If you have a season on them it would be nuts. I dont even hunt or own a gun but if there was a season you'd see me out there shooting away! As for now, I'll leave it up to the silenced .22's and the people with permission.
