Random Draft Day Thoughts

Here's what Todd McShay (scout.com) had to say about the Vikes picks

Minnesota Vikings

Best pick: Chad Greenway, OLB, Iowa. The Vikings had to be elated that Greenway fell to them at pick No. 17. His below-average combine workout led to Greenway's slide, but outstanding instincts and athleticism are what make Greenway such a good pro prospect. Look for Greenway to take over immediately as a starting weakside linebacker in the Vikings' new Cover 2 scheme. The Vikings were also able to get a great defensive fit in the second round with cornerback Cedric Griffin (Texas), who should step in immediately as the replacement for Brian Williams (Jaguars) in the nickel package behind Antoine Winfield and Fred Smoot.

Worst pick: Ryan Cook, OC/OG, New Mexico. Cook was one of the worst reaches of the draft's first day. In my opinion, Cook lacks the athleticism and explosiveness to ever develop into a solid starter -- at center or guard -- in the NFL.

Work to do: The Vikings failed to select a true safety prospect, as fifth-round pick Greg Blue (Georgia) will need to move to outside linebacker to compete for playing time in the NFL. Otherwise, the team did a terrific job of addressing its needs. Now the challenge is to get Greenway ready for his starting role at weakside linebacker and Griffin ready to contribute in the nickel package. The team also has its work cut out with talented but raw quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (Alabama State), who they drafted in the second round.

Coming from a Packer fan, when you look at it on a year to year basis, I think right now Favre is over rated. Your first three things mentioned were all pre 2000.

Granted Favre may give the Pack the best chance to win, though even that is probably debatable now, but the best thing he can do right now is retire. Then, and only then, people will have the opportunity to look at him from a career standpoint and see all the great things he accomplished. Until he does, it will be a what has he done for us this year, and if you look at what he did last year it wasn't all that great.

I AGREE LAST YEAR AND THE YEAR BEFORE WERENT THE GREATEST BUT LAST YEAR EVERYONE WAS HURT GRANTED THAT MAY NOT HAVE CHANGED THE RECORD BUT GIVE HIM A LITTLE BIT OF HELP AND HOPEFULLY A BETTER DEFENCE AND WHO KNOWS

NOW FOR WALLEYE GUY I KNOW ITS HARD TO GIVE ANY PACKER PLAYER HIS PROPS BUT I KINDA THINK THAT YOUR JELOUS OF FAVRE AND THE PACKERS SUCCSESS. IT MAYBE DIFFRENT THIS YEAR BUT INTILL THE VIKES CAN NOT FOLD IN A MEANINGFULL GAME THAT INNER HATE FOR THE PACK AND THE BEARS IS GOING TO BE THERE.

BUT THIS YEAR MAYBE DIFFRENT THE VIKES MAY START OUT 0-5 AND THEN WIN THE WHOLE THING grin.gif

GOD I LOVE THIS GAME GO PACK!! tongue.gif

you keep playing this superbowl winner card all the time, it happend how many years ago? That would be like twins fans saying they have won more World Series than the Brewers cmon you can do better than the Super Bowl trump card cant you?

Come on Carl Gerbshmidt Brett Favre has a weakness 'his age' the guys desire to compete is tarnishing his once great career. Let him go...let him go

Folding in a meaningful game: yeah Brett Favre doesnt do that, oh wait his last play-off game ever was not folding, what excuse does he get for that game?

I am no packer fan but if someone says Favre is over rated they would be wrong.

he is getting to the end of his career but if you say he is over rated then I want to know who you think isn't over rated. If he is over rated then Peyton Manning is WAY over rated,

Ah Yes, the Hate for FAVRAH runs deep, very deep from you silly vikings fans. He is definately nearing the end of his term, but I think it's safe to say he was/is the best option for the upcoming season. It's sad when you vikes fans can't give the guy a little props just cause he's wearing a green jersey.

Hey Vikes fans, don't you think calling Favre old is quite the case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Well so far no one has answered the question that i asked. When is the last time Favre won a big game. Someone tell me, thats what my post was about. And once again i dont want too hear the "well when have the vikings won a big game". I know they havent won a superbowl but once again im not claiming any vikings QB too be god, this isnt about the vikings. Its a legitimate question for packer fans, over his career its been just as likely that Favre has been rotten in a big game than shined in a big game, maybe even more likely that he has been rotten. So thats my point, is why is he held up so high when in big situations in big games he hasnt done a whole lot. 3 MVP's are great but only 1 superbowl out of those seasons, how did the other seasons end? With othter QB's rising up and getting it done. This is not a question posted in bias, its a very legit question. Nothing i've wrote is made up or twisted, thats what has happened in his career.

Those last two posts couldn't have been more right on! The Packer faithful won't/can't admit that their HERO is over the hill and he is cutting into the learning curve time of their next Lynn Dickey! As for the Bears, I'll give the fellow credit for being passionate, but yes he is biased with the blinders on sometimes. The Bears will be good only because of that defense, the Packers will be optimistic until November when they start talking about next years draft and by the end of the year after they get that turd Aaron (I dropped so far) Rodgers some gametime, you'll be hearing packer fans chanting "Draft Brady Quinn"!!

I'll admit he's getting old but i don't think he's over the hill! if i remember right, Elway was 37 when Denver won their last super bowl. you guys just need to understand that the Packers are rebuilding whether we/you/anyone wants to admit it. you never want to use the excuse of injuries but the Pack sure had a few last year at their skilled postions. they couldn't pay Wahle and Rivera the big bucks because they did that with Tauscher and Clifton. if you guys want to say it or not you're just p*ssed that he came back for one more year because there's always that chance he'll send you home with a loss. smile.gif

as for "winning a big game" i mean, i mean, i mean, you've only got a hand full of quarterbacks that ever win the "big game"! there's one "big game" it's the super bowl and you viking fans have NEVER been a part of the winning side and that bugs you so much you can't deal with it! Favre has won the "big game", that would be one more time than the Vikings ever have won and the way they're going it could be a long time before they do!!!

Oh my god, in every post i said i didnt want too hear the old vikings have never done it bit, it doesnt apply here. Im not talking about Favre just winning the superbowl, im talking about big games in general, playoff games. And im not talking about last year, like i said the packers had like 3 years in a row prior too last year with loads of talent and Favre never got them even close too where they should have gotten. Yeah they had injuries last year, but your backup running backs were just fine, you didnt miss a beat there. Walker getting hurt didnt help but get used too it hes not there this year either. Favre was the exact reason for so many losses last year because of his stupid throws into coverage. Look at that bonehead toss against the bears last year, thats just the tip of the iceberg.

That win was more because of the play of Desmond "tutu" Howard and Reggie White than Brett Favrah! I still love the Holmgren coaching call for the ages... let Terrell Davis score so we can have more time on the clock for Favrah to bring us back and tie and win in OT!! Who knows, maybe TD would have fumbled like so many others have on the goal line... we'll never know... the only thing we can remember is the fact that Brett Favrah did NOT bring them back in the BIG GAME!!! Thats what I remember, anybody else remember that?

Chill out River Rat,

The only reason your loss to the Giants was brought up was because another poster talked about the Bears getting hammered in the playoffs. I used your hammering by the Giants as a retort to that statement. Who are you to make light of the Bears not getting out of the first round of the playoffs? How many times have you been to the Super Bowl and lost? I'll give your some props because the Bears haven't been competitive in a while but those days are behind us now. Our O will step up this year and we will have the best "D" in the entire league not just the division. You need to get a "D" so you have no justification making fun of our offense. The Bears/Packers are one of the greatest rivalries in all football so what are you talking about? You know right now your team knows who they'll be gunning for this year and it ain't the Pack. Now go home and do some research on records, division titles and series matchups then come back and talk to me because I ain't going nowhere rat boy. I'll be here throughout the football season to back up my team as they sweep the division this year and your team watches the playoffs from home again.

yeah they will step it up, maybe Kyle Orton will average more than 100yds per game passing this year. I forgot about all the positive off-season improvements to the bears offense, watch out NFC north!

The bears do have a GREAT defense I wont deny that, but cmon admit your offense is weak and you know it.

I'll give the bears their props, they had a great defense last year but they didn't address a need like a solid off player. G.B didn't get a o-line player, which they need Favre will be killed again this year. GB did get a good defensive draft I will give them that. The Vikes besides Greenway looks like they drfted a bunch of special teams players, I not sure but I believe that GB did have the best draft of all North teams

DTE, You bring so much logic to this forum it's unreal.

So by some peoples standards, there have only been 25 different QBs, that are great since they won the big one. So we should be putting the likes of Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, and Perry Hostetler on a pedestal higher than guys like Marino, Kelly, and Manning. Ease up drinking the lakewater caue the bacteria is gettin to your brain.

For the three teams in this little discussion here is a little stat for you. CHI 14-16, MN 18-24, GB 24-14. Those are playoff records for each indidvidual team. I think some of the games were in the Pre-Superbowl era, but didn't feel like seperating them all out. Favre has 11 of those victories, and that is answering the "big game" bell enough for me. One other point to highlight is that the 24 losses by the vikes is the highest of all teams including ones that competed much more in the pre-Superbowl era(cough chokers cough).

I'll take the run the Pack has had in the last 15 years or so, since they've pretty much owned, owned the division. Face it, it's the truth.

Yes our QB is over the hill, but at least he has been at or close to the crest at a few points along the way. The closest you have come lately is standing on Pudgy Denny's stomach to get a glimpse of the promised land. So if all you have to hang your hats on lately is the one win in Lambeau in the playoffs a few years back, I sure hope you don't have any more hats.

Here's to the NFC North, worst Division in Football again.

Hey guys I can paint a pretty picture with numbers too:

How cruel the post-season has been since the Superbowl victory. As the Packers have faded from their Super Bowl luminance, so did Favre's glorious playoff numbers.

Starting with the Packers' elimination in the first round of the playoffs on Terrell Owens' miracle catch in '98 to the infamous "fourth-and-26" game against Philadelphia in Jan. 2004, the playoffs have been nothing but heartbreak and frustration for Favre.

-Missed the playoffs in '99 and 2000,

-came back in 2001 only to bow out in the second round in a 45-17 loss to St. Louis in which Favre threw a playoff record-tying six interceptions , three of which were returned for touchdowns.

-The following year the Packers lost the first home playoff game in franchise history to the Atlanta Falcons.

-In '03, the Packers blew a shot to play in the NFC Championship Game with the Eagles debacle

-In '04 Favre threw four interceptions in another home playoff loss, this time to division rival Minnesota .

Eight years later, his post-season record has fallen to 11-9 and his passer rating has dropped to 84.0. He has thrown 11 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions in going 2-5 since the loss to the Broncos .

still wanna take that run, besides that only Superbowl victory, the packers have done as much as the vikings, nothing!
