I dont understand your question... You can not compare these 2 lines. One is a mono and the other is a braid? Each has their own use and work best in different situations.

Both are very quality lines, for me if I am going to put on a braid, it will for sure be PowerPro... up untill this year I have used P-line for most all my mono applications, but this year I am going to give Gamma a shot. I really like this line and think it may outperform the Pline.

My experience is that Power pro's shock resistance is not enough for bait casting rigging and hook setting. It's sensitivity is like all braids, but i have had numerous occassions setting the hook with jigs, t-rigged worms/tubes, or even spinnerbaits to have the line break on itself. EVEN with average hook sets.

i would recommend this line for spinning but at the lower pound tests...

I've never heard of this or had it happen to me, and I use it on all of my baitcasters. What pound line are you using? What type of knot? I use 20 or 30 lb line and exclusively palomar knots and it performs awesomely.

FOr a short peroid of time I myself was thinking I was breaking the knot on the hook set... However, with some digging I found out I was pulling the knot through the gap in the hook.. knot still in tact. With braids you really have to be carefull about that.

Actually P-Line does make a braided/super line...I have it on my musky rigs...It is called 'Spectrex IV'. 65LB Test, 17LB Diameter...

A little hard to find but a very good overall line.

Take care!

Just to follow up and with respect on the comment regarding Power-pro breaking.

I used the 30lb (braid strength) version, tying both palomars and the doubled up trilene knot with limited success and breaking off more than what would be acceptable on hard hook sets. Actually breaking off on hook sets isn't acceptable at all.

I have considered that these breakoffs might be from the 7'0 med/hvy and hvy rod actions being used or stronger than usual hooksets. However, I am pretty sure my hooksets have not changed over the past 5 years of using various braids. When throwing both tubes, jigs, and t-rigged worms in reeds and slop, I will not downsize on the rod action.

I would have to say I broke off 10% - 30% of the time last year in the type of cover mentioned earlier. Knots were not slipping through the eyelet as one person suggested but clearly breaking above the knot. Line from the hook was not shredded or compromised either. In the past, I have used Tuf Line for these applications and was pretty happy with the results, however I heard and read great things about Power-pro both on these forums and literature, particular looking for a green line instead of the salt and pepper color of the Tufline.

Last year's experiment with Power-pro didn't work for me. I am going to keep with the Tuf-line for heavy slop and reed fishing, and trying some spider wire for the open water apps and fishing the edge of cover pads, reeds or timber.

As mentioned, this Power-pro worked ok for spinning gear specifically while dock fishing. I tried that after not being happy with the baitcasting results and had more confidence on the spinning rigs. However, I think I would downgrade the 30lb braid strength to the 20lb to get even more of a thinner diameter.

Line selection is based on confidence. To each is his/her own opinion on what makes you feel primed to be successful.

I can't afford breaking off with either my hooksetting style or rod selection for each fishing application. It was too frustrating #1: Losing the fish on a break off, but #2: Not having confidence in the line next time you retie and toss the jig back into hawg heaven.

I have little confidence for the shock absorption of Power-pro on my baitcasting outfits which involve getting the hook through the bait and hauling bass out of cover quickly. That's my 2, 3, and 4 cents worth on it.

As a side note, prior to Tuf-line I used the original Gorilla Braid and that was awesome. They took it off the market for a few years and now reintroduced it. I am not sure if it has changed but have not since retried. Any comments on the Gorilla Braid and if it changed?"

I guess I would suggest going with a heavier test on Power-Pro in the situations you are describing. I'm not a bass fisherman and not claiming expertise in that area, but do know guys fishing heavier line than that for that application.

I personally have snapped 50lb twice in one day while catfishing. One of the breakoffs was exactly as you described, about 12" up the mainline. I now use 80lb exclusively for my catfishing and have been treated well.

80lb is heavy, heavy line but you still have a small line diameter. IMO, its equavilent to a 12lb mono or so.

Catchin- one last question then I will leave you alone. Did you buy the Power-Pro online? I know I saw on the Powerpro-HSOforum that they found product that was not theirs in ultra similar packaging that was comming from overseas. Supposedly all the store bought stuff over here is fine. Just be carefull of HSOList buys and the such.

also, I am not associated with powerpro at all.. Just really like the stuff. I use MH 7.5' flipping stick with 30 lb and have bent jig hooks on my hook set and not broke the knot. I am not calling you a liar at all, just confused as why it happened to you.

Yes there was a Power Pro knockoff hitting the web and even some stores. It was very poor quality.

I love my power pro and dont have any problems breaking off. Its the best superline I have ever used for jigging.

Like I mentioned, I had poor experience with it and subsequent low confidence. Quality tournament fish are hard enough to come by, can't be thinking about the line breaking.

Didn't hear about a knock-off out there, but did buy the spools at Gander in Minnetonka. I am going to stay away from it on my baitcasters regardless.

Yepper I heard of the knockoff stuff out there too. Myself I love Power Pro, and fireline both. I run different weights of PP 10# to 40# on a few different baitcast setups without a problem one, I can't stand braids for the most part on spinning setups. In regards to 30# PP I have used it for a number of years on a few rods that I use to baitfish LOTW Pike, and on my Sturgeon rods, as well as using it for them big Red river Catfish. Not a problem one for me over the years at all, now I may not give the big whoa-son billy bob bass hookset, but I hit 'em with the steel pretty good eh, these can also be quite large fish sometimes, and them Sturgeon can pull hard, them 3 foot Catfish can buck like no bass, and a 20+ pound Pike pulls pretty good too in comparison to any MN bass, and I'm not losing these fish on the hookset, nor the battle, barring unforseen incidents of course!. I still like that 14# fireline when trolling hardbats for them LOTW Walleyes, seems to me to be a bit more bite-off resistant than PP in same strength range when the green and slimeys want the lure.

It is about what a guy has confidence in for sure, and I have full and complete confidence in Power Pro braids, they have not once dissapointed me.
