Cost of mounting a crappie (or other fish)?

BLACKJACK

Recommended Posts

There are couple of other posts concerning how to preserve a fish for taxidermy, what are people finding out as far as costs for a crappie mount? Does the price per fish go down if you do two or three? What does it cost for other fish like walleyes and northerns?

By the way, I do have two crappies in the freezer to mount. The last couple of times up to Red I've been meaning to grab a 14 incher (I've come to the realizaion that the 15 inchers are nonexistant), but was out locally with my wife several weeks ago and she caught a couple of 14 inchers - and said she wanted them mounted!

Down here it costs about $10 an inch no matter what kind of fish it is! That is at quaility places though, if you aren't willing to pay the price I wouldn't have it done. I'm talking from experience on that one, I made the mistake of having one mounted from a "friend" and it looks REAL bad now!

Be carful when taking your fish to the taxidermist who is the cheapest. I got my 31in walleye done by a guy for $75 what a great deal right? Wrong! He must have been color blind because it didn't look anything like when i caught it and he posed it really unatural the mouth is over opened. So i'm a true beliver in you get what you pay for when it comes to taxidermy. I do know another taxidermist that does do excellent work at reasonable rates. Don't know what he charges for fish but it only cost me $225 for a shoulder mount my deer. Let me know if your interested.

I've had two 15" plus crappies from URL mounted. Each one was $150 plus $25 for driftwood on each. This guy is very good and well worth the money, although it took 18 months to get them back, which I guess is a good sign cause he is that busy.

I'm definately not looking for the cheapest job, just a general idea on what to expect for a good job that YOU were satisfied with. Put down some names of taxidermists if they did a really good job. I'm also debating the replica idea, both cost and longevity wise, I thought I'd leave that for another post.

And here's my fresh 14 3/4" Upper Red Lake Crappie. I'm going to try and add another 3 or 4 fish to this one this winter.

They are mounts.

I posted these photos before and the extra white was pointed out. After handling 20 some URL crappies last weekend, the light yellow color really extends way down to the belly. The yellow gets much lighter but doesn't really turn pure white. When I get a couple more done, I'm bringing in very specific photos and will have the 1 fish touched up as well.

There's a guy in Coon Rapids by the name of Jack Hanson who does a terrific job on crappies for $125 flat. I had him do one several years ago when the price was $100 (plus the cost of the driftwood) and it looks great. You would have to look him up in the white pages--don't think he's listed as a taxidermist.

dukhnt...WOW! Thats really deep! Totally Awesome!

I unfortunately can't take credit for that one. It was on the back of my cousins husbands taxidermy business card. I made the mistake of bringing 2 ducks to a guy for $75, after seeing them, I guess I should have ate them instead. My cousins husband did my snow goose and two bufflehead. There are pics of them on the waterfowl mount thread in the duck hunting forum. Couldn't be more pleased. He unfortunately quit the businees. So my crappie I am holding is at Minnesota Valley in Burnsville. Should turn out great, only six more months till I get it. Can't wait.

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
