Man that would be fun! I shot one yesterday across from my parents place. Dad spotted him and called me to come out. Almost too easy. Fresh snow is the clear ticket. Might get out and do some calling one of these nights.

Hey Ortonville, I just talked to my aunt who owns a farm on the south shore of Long Tom Lake. I told her about you shooting coyotes out there and she said'Send him out here. The coyotes are eating all my wild turkeys." If you are looking for a place to hunt coyotes, give Caroline Zahn a call. She's in the Ortonville phone book.

icehouse,my parents farm is just down the road from the zahn farm. to the west a mile or less. we own land just across the road from 1 of her fields. we didnt do so good to day. we only got 3. but it was still fun. 2 of the 3 came from our land. so you can tell her we are thinning them out. total for the year so far is 24.but they have come from a big area.we have hunted from chokio to odessa, and as far west as barry.and as far east as artichoke

ortonville, were you out cruising and spotting,or calling?

Sounds like you're in a good area with alot of critters. We've thought about getting on some CRP land and try'n some day calling,or getting on a fresh track and try walking 'em out.

Haven't had much luck at all with day calling until we cross over the border a ways into the Dakota's.

hawgman, we have been driving around and spottiing them and then 1 guy gets out and goes after them. we have the permits to use radios so then we can guide the person in the field or he can guide us as to where the yote is headed it seams to work pretty good.3 of the yote have came from calling. but we just dont seem to have the luck that way. i dont know we maybe doning something wrong as this is the first year we have tried it.

Ortonville how do you get the permit for the use of radios. also wondering is the state land in that area hold yotes as well, am looking to head that way in the end of January. either near odessa or ortonville, please let me know if you dont mind.

you just have to get ahold of a game warden and fill out a form it is good for 3 years i think.you have to give them the make, model and what channel you are going to be useing. as far as state land yes there are yotes useing it but most of them come from fence lines in the morning and rock piles when they are sunning themselves.like i said we just drive around and spot them and go after em.we have permission from a lot of people and some we dont i dont think people get to excited when we go acrossed there land as we have never been yelled at for it when we have not had permission but i am not saying it wont happen.the local vfw club is haveing a hunt on 1-7 if anybody is interested.call the vfw in ortonville 320-839-3954 ask for val. 100% payback last year we got 3rd and if i remember right it was $250.

How does this add up? First of all, with the depth of snow in the fields, you would have to have a heck of a "motor" to walk out and get 10 coyotes right now. Second of all, 18 + 10 + 3 is not even close to 24. So what gives?

I think maybe it could be a miss print, that sort of thing does happen around here from time to time. and the ten yotes thing. it doesn't really seem to hard to drive around and spot them and then whack them. maybe it's just me. Ortonville keep up the good work, oh and you might want to invest in a calculater to avoid others questioning your results!!! smile.gif

Coyotes don't just stand next to the road, let you drive up and get out, and shoot them. If they are using the method he described, it is time consuming (not to mention energy). Snow is up to your shins every step. I know because I was hunting also last weekend. Also the area he described has even more snow on the ground than where I was. We spot and hunt them, and every time you leave the truck its 45 mins to an hour. Once a coyote knows its being watched or chased, it will not just hop into the first patch it comes across and fall asleep. However, they won't hesitate to leave the section.

Actually, I am happy someone besides us is doing their best to thin them down. His reports just don't jive real well, that's all. Good luck the rest of the winter, you're right about them pairing up already.

I think 10 coyotes in one day is definately possible. We had 6 dead by 11:00 am before. Heck, 2 years ago, we shot three out of a slough in about 10 minutes. All it takes is a few paired up, some luck, and you're in business.

Nice Job Ort!

i may have got screwed up on the count we. we where hunting with some guys that went to useing snowmobiles so we quit hunting with them so yes the numbers dont add up. but with the yotes the 3 of us have shoot ourselves we are at 24.with the ones we have shot with a few other guys i know it is over 40. but like i said we wont hunt with them any more with them useing snowmobiles.if you dont think we could shoot 10 in one day come on out. and bring your snow shoes.i hope you are in shape because i bet you will be tired in the first hour. as far as them letting you drive up to them and shoot them no it doent happen. you have to have someone get out in the section and push them to someone on the road and most time they will see you on the road and double back and the guy out in the section gets the shot. if you dont belive me the offer is there come on out and i will show you how it is done.and i will get the pictures on here just as soon as i can to prove it to everyone. just give me a chance it has been busy at work

That's alright. You've done all the proving you need to by standing up and explaining the situation. I believe you now, its just that the majority of people like to stretch things a little.

As far as the snowmobiles, that's too bad. They're so (Contact US Regarding This Word) fun to actually hunt. Take it easy.

Hey Ortonville, I was at my aunt's place just east of your folk's farm this morning and her son, Doug Zahn, was out there sighting in a new .22-250. He said if you're looking for someone to hunt with to give him a call. He's in the Ortonville phone book. And keep whacking them dogs!! smile.gif

Hey ortonville, how did the hunt through the VFW go on Saturday? Who won? I'm originally from Ortonville and I was just curious. I know my brother was talking about this hunt, but I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet and see if participated in it.

Keep up the good work.
