New licenses/tags

I did a little experiment recently to test the new tags. I took the stub of my deer license, used the prepunched hole, and cable tied it to the back of the snowmobile trailer (loosly so it would flop around) and drove about 800 miles. When I got back it was still there. It also got wet going through some rain in its journey. I didn't have it placed directly in the airflow but I was pleasently surprised at how well it held up. I bet a person could use a big headed nail and just nail it right onto the fishhouse and it would stay for the winter. After this I personally think this is an improvment over the adhesive tags that it replaced.

thats nice that it held up, but i dont think us guys with portables have any advantage with the new tag. i personaly would perfer the sticky back. peel it, stick it one the license holder and done.

im not happy with the change.

I got mine last March too. Hopefully buy the this March comes around they will have heard enough greif over the new tags and go back to the PSA tags. I stick mine on a piece of cardboard and then into the CLAM Corp. sleeve they make. I can stick mailbox numbers for my DL info on the cardboard too. It works very well for the fish trap but my permanant is a different story.

Do u know u only need a tag for the house you're in. If u stick it or nail it to the house, u can't get it off. I laminated mine and then use thumb tacks of my wood house . Then when I leave Itake it off so I can use it on my portable.

Yes SOME think it's a grey area, but I do not believe you need a license on a House that you are not using.

I leave my license on my Permanent house and rotate 1 additional shelter tag between my 4 portables.

STOP using your Drivers license numbers!!! Use your DNR number!!!!!

Not sure how he interpreted the removal of a license if not occupied as being legal, i read it as any fishhouse on the lake is required to be licensed.

"Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing must be licensed"

Simple if you read the REGS page 70.

• All shelters, which include dark houses, fish houses, and portable

shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have the

complete name and address or driver’s license number or Minnesota DNR number of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height.

Thats clear and Fair enough.

Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing must be licensed , except that a license is not required on border waters with Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota.

Again very clear and as I interpret this, as long as my name and DNR # are on my shelter and as long as I'm not fishing in it I am legal. I know a lot of people that take their permanent tags home because of prior theft of license along with others who will not give the DNR anymore money then they have to.

Hope this helps. grin.gif

Pierbridge,

I would like it to be interpeted as you say, but it is not clear. The sentence could also be interpreted to mean that you need a tag if the reason the fishhouse was put on the ice was to provide shelter while fishing. Anyway, the regulation is poorly written and needs clarification.

That makes sense since you aren't going to be buying multiple license tags for each house you own. I was interpreting that the "tag" that was being taken off the permanent was the MNDNR number rather than the shelter license. Your MNDNR number needs to be on the house whether occupied or not.

For those of you who have multiple fish houses: I laminate my number and license, then attach a string to the laminate and a small clamp to the other end of the string. That way you can attach/remove the laminated license on all door handles, zippers, etc of all of your fish houses, including portables. Carabiners for rock climbing also work well if you don't have a clamp.
