We have shot a couple of these over the years that were immature birds with no color here in northern wisconsin. Last saturday, wyldwal and I had the opportunity to harvest a couple of gorgeous old squaw drakes in full color. Here's a picture of one of them. I know its not the best picture and doesn't do it justice. I know a lot of hunters consider the bull can a trophy. I believe this is also a trophy and of course, its going on the wall.

Mudcat,

We haven't been seeing too many buffles around yet this year. Just a couple here and there. Hopefully they don't wait untill after season to come through for you.

I can tell you that when the oldsquaws came in it shocked the heck out of me! grin.gif

Good luck.

wydewal,

That's what I'm kinda affraid of is the weather not working in my favor and then the season will be over. Get through deer season down here and then it's back in the duck boat waiting for whatever to drop into those decs!

Thats a great pic! I'm from SE Iowa and I shot a drake Old Squaw on a public marsh in 1996. There were two of these birds swimming together and they were in and out of my decoys for about an hour. I sat there, wondering what the heck they were, I could see the sprigs on both of them but I could easily tell they weren't Pintails. My Granddad told me at an early age, " if you don't know what it is, don't shoot!" Well I listened to myself repeat those comments for a long time that day, and finally I couldn't stand it anymore. I jumped them up out of my dekes and shot one. I sent my dog and she retrieved this mystery bird. I took this bird to everyone I knew that waterfowled and nobody could identify it. We resolved it to be a widgeon/pintail cross. I stuck it in my freezer to get mounted and about a month later I was reading my DU magazine and low and behold they had an Old Squaw photo gallery! Bingo! This trophy is gracing my wall! they are rarity in my part of the world, I'm a long ways from the great lakes and any ocean. The bird I shot must have been blown off course in a storm or something.

That's simply AWESOME!!! It's always a huge thrill when you shot an out of the ordinary duck. I'm anxious to see pics of it mounted on the wall. The only oddity we get around the Deer River area are scoters every now and then.
