The tagging process?

I was wondering if anyone else in MN thought that the way you have to site tag deer seems kinda chincy? The way of the string, then attaching the tag to the animal and hope that the tag stays on during the drag and transport? You would think there would be a better way? confused.gif

I agree. Got my first deer this year and I was so worried about it blowing off in the back of the truck that I wrapped a rag around the tag and her rear leg and tied it tight with some twine. Overkill maybe but I didn't want to get there with no tag.

Zip Ties work great. A couple guys in our crew put the tag around the leg or antler and then wrap the string and the whole tag with a couple plastic sandwich baggies and then wrap a piece of duct tape around that. If a CO wants to inspect their tag they can easily peel or snip the tape and resecure it afterwards.

I recently was checked by the local DNR officer and he was unaware of the new way to tag it and so was I. We eventually figured it out and we both thought it was a very cheap way to go. I also talked to a friend of mine who had tagged a deer with the new system and he said he had a tough time keeping the tag on when he was draggin it out. In my opinion, the state is getting cheaper and cheaper and even the licenses are seeing the effects.

Tagged some myself already this year and I'm not as enthused about it as D.D.

Wouldn't "we" be able to come up with something both as cheap and more user friendly in this day and age. I like the thought of a pre-made ziptie attatchment so the hunter doesn't have to remember anything but the tag.

I myself am not big fan of the new tagging system. It's a good concept, but not real practical. I don't see why they can't come up with some premade type tag made of plastic that is zipped to the deer. They could have premade zip tags that are distributed to all the ELS agents. On these tags there could be a place for for some type of sticker that could be attached. You'd get the sticker and plastic tag when you buy your license. You could pre-fix the sticker on the tag before the season starts. Then all you'd have to do is mark the appropriate info on the tag when you fix it to the deer. Seems simple enough and I think I could personally keep easier track of a plastic tag then those paper ones. I always seem to misplace them before season opens.

Yah, I agree, for the most part it isn't an issue. But what about that one time you shoot a nice buck in the middle of a swamp and tamarack grove. It's a half mile drag to get it out, its getting dark, and your on your own. You gut it out, get it drug out, your standing there, sweating, tired, yet happy you filled your tag. Wait a minute....what tag....all thats left is a piece of string or zip tie. Now what do you do? Granted its not going to happen a lot, but once would be enough for me. There are things a guy could do to help eliminate such a situation, but my fanny pack is full enough that I don't need to carry any more items. A simple "permanent" tag would be better in my opinion.

I spent 10 minutes trying to peel the backing off the tag in the dark after shooting my first deer of the season last weekend.

After that I read the directions that said something about putting the string through one of the die cuts in the tag. I then realized the tags are not stickers anymore. But looking at the tag I have no idea what or where a die cut is....

I like the new tags. They are tuff and don't tear easy like you think. I also use zip ties and it works great. I hate sticker tags, annoying and doesn't stick when wet and dirty. Plus you can still pull the string through the sticker.

This is not that big of a deal, and IMHO the old sticker and string was not a good way to tag at all. Get a little bag of tie straps when you get your license. The tie straps will outlast the method as I am sure the DNR is already dreaming up a new tagging system.
