Well Bass, I don't think I even would have gone that far. If it was my only time to hunt the whole season I would have gone ahead with it, but I think you did the right thing. The way things were going for you you might have shot your foot if you had a deer come in. I think with all the trouble you had getting in you may have spooked the deer away and they would have taken different routes, but you never know. They may have been curious to who was making all the noise and come to see. Sorry about the bummer morning, regroup and try again, better luck next time.

listen closely! I came home a day early from a weekend pheasant hunting last year because my knee was killing me, the dogs were beat and we were having less than great shooting. Guess where I went on Sunday? Beker Furniture World! If you are a married guy (like me) NEVER go home early.

doesnt somebody on this forum have a signature that says "A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work"

Substitute fishing for hunting and I think you will get where I am going.

Dont worry, we all have those days. Better luck next time.

Hey Bassboy if you hadn't of forgotten your licence I would have stuck with it. Last gun season I shot a nice basket 8 pointer around 0800 AM. I yelled "Yea!" loudly when I dropped it, climbed down and gutted it, walked out of the area and back to my truck to retrieve the string that I forgot to tie my tag on and returned to tie the tag on my buck. After all this noise and commotion when I stood up after admiring my deer for a couple of minutes I was face to face with the largest buck that I have ever seen hunting in this area!! shocked.gif He was coming to a stop and looking at me like "wher the $#%^ did you come from?" I didn't even count the points. I just remember a very large swelled neck and beautiful wide symetrical rack. Well needless to say, my rifle was out of reach and we just stared at each other for a few seconds until he'd had enough and wheeled around and in a few bounds ended up back in the thick stuff out of view! To top it off he snorted and blew at me for a few minutes before slipping away. All I could do was laugh at myself. smirk.gif My lesson learned was that just because you made a commotion or moved around doesn't mean that more deer will not show up (especially during the rut)! If nothing else do some still hunting or scout for another spot. I feel for you man!

worse lesson I've learned was a call of nature. Couldn't take it any more in the tree so I snuck as far as I could while still maintaining control, found a log and hung my rear over it. After about 30 seconds a big doe comes walking into view and my gun's about 8' away leaning against a tree. This is back when there were almost no doe permits in our area. If they can come in after what I was doing... ya never know. grin.gif

of course that lack of license thing's a deal breaker and the way that day was going you'd have run into the world record buck being ridden by a CO.

Forgetting your license was your mind's way of telling you to go home and curl up with a good woman. Just tell the wife you got out there and decided that she meant more to you than hunting, so you came home. Of course, being accident prone that morning, it might not be a good time to cuddle the wife. grin.gifgrin.gif
