Bucks with velvet on bow opener

Seems like every year I see a few on opening weekend with velvet. When younger, I passed up two different bucks in two years in full velvet. Both would have been shy of P&Y, but in that 105-115 inch range with velvet I'm now kicking myself. This year the opener is the 17th, which is a little late so we'll see what happens.

I have seen 3 larger bucks out of vevet in the last few days. I did get a small buck on the trail cam that still had velvet. I am in northern mn.

In North Dakota on opener(sept 1)I usually see a buck in velvet.In 2002 I shot a 9pt in velvet and let me tell you they are very hard to drag out by the horns,very slimy rack.

I saw an 8 pointer a week ago with full velvet in west central minnesota, does the velvet just come off when they start marking their territory or is there another reason why they rub it off besides rut of course

I believe once the growth process is finished the blood supply ends, the velvet somewhat dries and possibly becomes itchy for the buck.

My cameras as of last weekend still have a buck in velvet. I have not seen any pics of hard antlers yet.

Gonna change very fast now though.

saw a little 8 tonight that appeared hard racked but last night i saw a bigger deer with velvet both in the same area within 5 miles,this is around the ada area. would be nice to nail one with velvet.

Here in NE Montana, the buck have all rubbed the Velvet off that I have seen. Seams as they are always ealier here than most areas I have seen. CAJ

When I get a chance, I will pull the camera in watching the feeder, we have five or six that were in the process , junk all hanging off the rack, one lost the entire side.

Sounds like most of the older, shooter bucks are dry. Saw several near Hayward over the weekend and all were velvet free. Never know about the oddball buck though. Probably see the usual spikes and basket racks with some velvet come Sat.

I was in North Dakota for 3 days and all the bucks I saw this weekend were out of velvet from smaller fork horns to nice 8 pointers.
