Bucks with velvet on bow opener

Cooter

Recommended Posts

Seems like every year I see a few on opening weekend with velvet. When younger, I passed up two different bucks in two years in full velvet. Both would have been shy of P&Y, but in that 105-115 inch range with velvet I'm now kicking myself. This year the opener is the 17th, which is a little late so we'll see what happens.

In North Dakota on opener(sept 1)I usually see a buck in velvet. In 2002 I shot a 9pt in velvet and let me tell you they are very hard to drag out by the horns, very slimy rack.

Sounds like most of the older, shooter bucks are dry. Saw several near Hayward over the weekend and all were velvet free. Never know about the oddball buck though. Probably see the usual spikes and basket racks with some velvet come Sat.
