To begin, I'm not ashamed to admit that I make a living finding oil & gas. Yesterday, on my way home from the Williston Basin, I heard North Dakota's egg sucking Liberal, Senator Dorgan, re-visit the topic of a windfall profits tax on energy producers. If this proposal get through, we'll be looking at European fuel prices right here in the heartland of the USA. How's $6.50 per gallon sound when your filling the 40 gallon Pro-V tank and the 35 gallon Bourbon tank, Sounds like nearly $500 to me.

Here's some hard facts based on $2.65 per gallon gasoline

Taxes $0.46

Refining and Marketing $0.74

Crude Oil Cost $1.45

If anyone can see where the windfall in there is let me know.

Jimmie Carters Windfall profits tax caused over 60% of americas independent producers to go out of business. Is anyone willing to allow that to happen again?

oilguy,

I can't argue with your math, you would certainly be a guy in the know.

So is exxon posting record profits through ventures in something other than oil and gas?

It wouldn't seem that they are feeling any pinch, while the consumer bears the burden of "too much demand".

We consume 21 million Barrels of oil per day. Folks thats 882 million gallons PER DAY.

We are able to produce 6 million domestically, the bulk of which is produced by independent producers. To jeapordize domestic productiion with a windfall profits tax is suicidal.

Gas price in Wadena was $3.19 in two stations and $2.89 in another and there were still people filling up at the $3.19 stations. Hard to believe. I was bored at work yesterday so I checked the Canadian gas price survey HSOforum. I found it interesting that once you did the math, that the gas price was cheaper in Fort Francis than it was in International Falls. All those years of driving by the Canadian stations and laughing at the high prices they had to pay and now this. Another guy in the office questioned my math, so I did it all over and with the same result. Just this morning I saw an article in the Star-Trib that said "Minnesota gets most of its gas from Canada". I don't get it. Why are we paying so much?

OK now is when I start to get a little peeved... Here in Duluth we are one of the first in the state to up the price at the pumps. Now when gas is falling around the state we are still at 3.09 2.89 in the cities 2.77 in Brainerd We live within the shadows of a refinery yet we are 30 cents higher. This is when the local stations stick it to ya. Gas up here has always been higher then in the cities. You can go to Esko 15 miles away and get gas 6-8 cents cheaper ( yes I do when I driving through )... Just ticks me off When Holiday/Spur/ICO (which along with the milk house control Duluth) and yes I do know what I am talking about I worked for two of them as a manager..Damm I hate getting screwed when I don't get kissed.... Just my two pennies worth..

Mr Nailz, Greetings,

This is off the topic, but I was looking at past forums, and found that you posted an ad for a Silverline boat. I own a 140hp outboard 19' Nantucket, and would like to find an IO Merc. style. Any chance you still have that boat, or know who bought it? If you wish, you could contact me at my personal email addr. [email protected]. If anyone else knows of such a unit for sale, you could do the same. Thanks!!!

$3.60 a gallon Canadian funds?

last I knew canadian funds were .75 cents american to the canadian $1.

If that is correct, or close(not sure the current strength of our dollar).. that would make gas prices about the same as ours on the average.

everybody just stop complaining ok im surprised the oil companys havent jacked the price up higher yet they got us by the nuts and we cant do a darn thing about it.

Thier is no gas shortage ok thier is plenty of gas to fuel our country one problem is alaska the tree hugging freaks wont let us touch that oil if we could get a hold of that oil and build a bunch more refinareis i wouldnt be surprised to see 1.25-1.50 a gallon thier just isnt enough rifinareis(sorry for spelling errors)

thiers 3 main reasons gas is on the hike and 1 is logical

1 its is labor day weekend lots of traveling and people will travel anyways

2 thier was just a disaster in the southeast section of the us

3 not enough refinaries

the third one is logical the first to are not

thier just a way for the gas companies to pocket a lil extra cash

gas stations are not at fault i work at a gas station and were making the same amount per gallon right now as we did back in april (1.99 a gallon) gas stations are required by law to make 8 cents to the gallon

I just got home from work at my local station and I am getting fed up with patrons who are bitter towards me with the rising prices. We can't help it and we pay the same as you (also make less than you) so please be courteous to your gas station clerks.

We ran out of gas last week and weren't able to get a delivery until the following day. I heard rumors of strikes at the refineries. I hope our leaders will figure out a solution to our fuel prices soon though. Tuition is high enough.

Matt...I'm just using your post to reply off of...does'nt even have anything to do with your post, except for the gas part...anyways....

How is it that gas at one station can cost X and gas at a like station near by, costs XX and yet a 3rd station costs XXX?

Do each and all of these stations have their own special tanker that hauls in special gas refined in a super duper method, at a special refinery, especially for them? Nope.

Does all this gas come from different refineries that have different refining methods for the same product, some way more costly then the next? Nope.

I've got about 22 years of refinery experience behind me, from a beginning helper, to a refiner 1st. class, with Cargill Inc., in the Hexane gas extraction/distillation and refining division and also with Reichhold Chemicals, in the vegetable oil division.

The products that we made where put into a limited number of storage tanks and tankers from across the United States would all get the standard product from the standard tanks, what they did with it, what name they put on it, what they charged for it, was their concern, their business, we took care of our end of the chain, delivering the best high quality product that we could to the client.

I don't believe that refined gas is any different? There is like 3 Octanes sold at the stations, all the tankers are loaded from one of the 3 tanks....what makes it possible for a station to be 10 cents, to 40 cents different over the course of 1 city block, or a matter of 3 hours?

How come it mysteriously spikes up during high usage times like holidays and then comes down after the holiday rush is over, that is'nt a coincidence, thats a scam that they can get away with!

A station owner sells the gas a little cheaper and he gets arrested, some other dink gouges the public in a disaster area for $6.10 a gallon and nothing happens to them?

I know I'm not alone in thinking there is something really stinky with this gas business! But alas, after all the discontent and woofing, I have not a clue what the answer to the problem would be and just like the rest of the consumers, I will go to the pumps tommarrow and fill up if I have to. frown.gif

Hey Chris, I think what the 'ol Grebmeister is saying is there is some kind of law that says gas stations can't sell gas for too cheap. They are forced to mark it up so much a gallon. Otherwise gas stations could sell for cheaper and get all the business.

I remember gas wars back in the early '70's. One station on one side of the street would be a penny or two cheaper and then the guy on the other side of the street would mark his price cheaper.

One of the real big problems with gas prices is that we need it so bad the gas industry can charge whatever they (Contact US Regarding This Word) well please and they know we will pay cuz we hafta have it frown.gif

We use it for everything we do, it ain't like a TV, computer, fridge or stereo that can wait until next year to buy. Gas is something we need now and can't get around it, so they can charge some outrageous price and laugh all the way to the bank mad.gif

Anyone who thinks there isn't price fixing is living in a fantasy world.

Was filling up at the Spring Lake Store last weekend for the trip home ($2.99/gal), and I mentioned to the owner that he had the cheapest gas around at the time. He said, "That's cuz I refuse to screw people over like everyone else!" He told me that he pays one price to fill his tanks, so he charges one price until his tanks are empty and adjusts the price when he has them filled again. Shouldn't this be the way all stations operate???
