What kind of Oil do you use and why?

Recommended Posts

I guess the subject pretty much sums it up. What kind of oil do you use for frying fish and why? All I've ever used is the regular old vegetable oil. I'd like to mix it up if there is something better or different. I'm not much of a gourmet cook so I have no idea what's out there. Thanks!

Gus,

I've used good old vegetable oil mostly, but mix a little butter in for flavor as well. My mother-in-law suggested to try olive because it's healthier for you. I tried it and it worked very well. It's a little more $$ though. Peanut oil is also very good, but a little more money as well.

Good luck!!

Peanut oil if you want to impart little flavor to the fish, Good for high temp frying. For a great change up I also will mix butter flavor crisco in when I am pan frying. Usually mix it 50/50. Works great with crappies/sunnies!

A one half can of butter flavored crisco on a nice bed of camp fire coals - walleye fillets floured with your favorite mix and just plop in for @ five minutes. Oh ya, a big can of pork and beans right next to the crisco can "now THATS good eating"!!! grin.gif

I usually use canola oil. It does a pretty good job and is about as healthy as olive oil. If you're concerned about your health don't use crisco. It's a hardened or transfat and some health experts are saying it's as bad for you as smoking. If you want to try something really good try lard or bacon grease. They make great tasting fried fish, not very healthy but probably not as bad for you as crisco.

I too use the canola oil. It is a bit healthier than vegetable. Yes, crisco is bad for your health because of the trans fats. I used it one time and found the fish to not be cooked as well as in liquid oil. Olive is good for you but too far out of my budget.

I like olive oil too for stir fry and veggies. Gotta be careful, though, the smoke point is pretty low.

For deep frying turkeys and such, I prefer canola oil.

I've used peanut oil for this too, and it works great with its high smoke point. I don't care for the price, however.

Tryed the butter flavored crisco and ruined a other wise perfect batch of walleyes caught the real hard cold way drilling lots of holes in january, if you try something new dont fry a whole limit up before trying it to make sure YOU like it and the rest of the family we all hated the butter flavored crisco and threw the whole patch to the cats and went out to eat that night I got the tip from a friend who says its real popular up north not me I like butter but that was gross.

and I was just about to give the butter flavored crisco a whirl, even though it is unhealthy.

Which oil would you say makes the least mess of the stove after pan-frying?

I use Canola oil. Because of the mess I don't cook in the house and make a mess of my wifes kitchen. I use a two burner propane cook top and cook outside, I won't even cook in my shop because of the mess. When cooking outside, there isn't any mess to clean up and the smell stays outside also. When eating these made this way I feel like a King!!

On top of the round table that sits on the deck. Cover it with newspaper, put the camp stove in the middle and go fo it. No one will come over the next day and do that old "Humph, fish for supper last night?" We use canola or peanut oils. I also have two kettles going... you cant stand around the deck, talk smart, drink beer and eat very fresh crappies without home made french fries to go with them! Hmmmm, suddenly I am getting very ungry! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
