Deer Management

Recommended Posts

eyefisher,

This is definately a good subject to talk about. There are several beneficial reasons for deer harvest. By harvesting deer each season, we are not only providing food for our families, we are keeping the deer population under control. What would happen if no one hunted deer? Road kill numbers would go up drastically, deer infesting residential areas would increase and the disease rate in deer would reach an all time high.Inbreeding would be much much greater. So in saying this, the benefits of humans would be the backstraps on the grill and less vehicle/deer collisions which would lessen insurance claims and the benefits of the deer would be healthier deer herds and lot lesser chance of inbreeding which in return creates a lesser risk for disease. I hope this answers your question.

Don't forget about starving deer that would overrun wintering areas to the point that there would be nothing left to eat. Mortality of the deer would be absurd.

The animal lovers hate us for hunting the deer, but they would be the first to be crying for help to save the starving deer too.

It controls several things:

Disease in the herd

Overpopulation in general

Automobile collisions

Crop damage

It also provides a lot of things:

Revenue from licenses

Retail revenue from hunting products, guns, clothing, etc.

Family & friends bonding

Outdoor recreation- health

Meat for food

Jobs for guides & salesmen of outdoor products

Blackjack you stole my thoughts exactly. I was gonna post something similar but you beat me to it.

I gave up though, because what if it really is BLB's relation. HILARIOUS.

I have a good "pro" argument for you...if you'd like I can e-mail you a copy of the insurance settlement I got after I hit a nice 6 pointer with my Jeep last summer, although it did give me a reason to seek revenge on its relatives during season.

Let me dig them up for you....As I recall the mechanical was $2300 and the body was $2800, $100 for towing, $95 for hotel room in Two Harbors, $110 for rental car.... Oh yeah, and it caused severe emotional trauma to my two buys (ages 3 & 6) actually they were pretty shook up when it happened, I have to say that after it happened the car was not driveable (took out radiator) and I was sitting on the side of the road waiting for the tow, I must have had 10 cars stop and ask if I needed help or a ride into town. That would never happen here in the cities. That is the last time I decide to take the boys up to Gooseberry on a spur of the moment deal.

Biglake, that is something! Everytime I see it, I shake my head and laugh, after I fight off the barf reflex.

Back to the topic. How about the fact that deer hunting is fun, challenging, gets you out to enjoy nature, you get to see nature at its finest, its relaxing. Bottom line it improves our quality of life. If I couldn't hunt in the fall I'd....
