US/CDN Dollar, and how it affects you!

Recommended Posts

Does the value of the US dollar to the Canadian dollar affect your plans to come to Canada? 5 years ago, the loonie was only worth .62 to the american $1. Today it's drifting around .83 cents to the USD. Twenty five years ago, the loonie was worth more than a US buck. Just wanted to get your thoughts on how it may or may not affect your trips to the Great White North.

Feel free to comment on the ever increasing prices of fuel, food, liquor, tobacco, etc. Keep it informative, entertaining, and of course, clean.

Hemlock,

Even without the difference between the U.S. and Canadian dollar the resorts in Canada are a better value.Unless you want to spent a huge amount on rent they are cleaner, the cabins are in bettter condition and the fishing is much better. If it weren't for an occassional Saturday trip to Mille Lacs I probably would have no use for a Minnesota license. The fishing has really fallen off in the past ten to fifteen years and the cabins and docking has been, typically, dumpy in my price range. Thank God that I discovered fishing in Canada and on Lake Michigan.

We fish Saskatewan more than my home state of Montana, even if the dallor is getting smaller. The fishing is closer, cheaper for rooms and they appreciate you up there. Once in a while we here a few anti war coments, but that is allright with me. Doesn't seem to be the big crowds to fight as the boat ramps in North Dakota on Lake Sakejewa either. That is a mad house with the low water in the reservoir.

Hemlock, it's such a beautiful place to hunt and fish that I haven't thought once about the exchange rate. Maybe with it closing up a little, some of you can afford to vacation here a little more often. Also, buy the Canadian beer, it really doesn't cost much more after tariff, and it's always good. I spent three weeks exploring Ontario a few years ago, just roaming around while hunting up unknown relatives, and met some of the nicest people you could hope to meet, and many relatives I had never seen before. The nicest vacation I've ever had.

Wasn't the CDN dollar paper 25 yrs ago and not even called a Loonie?

Happy to report that I was able to take advantage of the record low CDN dollar you speak of, during a family fishing trip in Manitoba. I stopped getting up early to cook breakfast when I figured out that I could fill my son up with the lodge's breakfast special for less than $2.

The rising CDN dollar won't change my plans. Gonna build a fishing trip around my son's June hockey tournament in Wpg. I heard that the typically high gas prices are even more outrageous around Kenora during the summer (specifically July 1st weekend). Do you know if this is true?

Still good to hear the positive feedback. Sounds like between good fishing/hunting, good beer, food and lack of people, and you throw in a few nice folks here and there, it doesn't matter what the exchange rate is.

Yes, the CDN $ used to be paper and called a "dollar" In 1986, the 1$ coin was introduced aka "loonie" Canadians didn't think that we would like them, but after living in MN for 8 years trying to stick those crinkled dollar bills into machines....well, the loonie never fails. I think the term "loonie" has simply been adopted as the term for our dollar. And we liked it so much, we introduced a two dollar coin. We call this one the "twoonie"....and we wonder why Canadians aren't taken seriously sometimes??? tongue.gifconfused.giflaugh.gif

Kingfisher,

Were most of their guests American? smile.gif

I'm not going to start a political angle here, but more CDN's oppose than are for it. This is not meant to be a conversation starter comment....just a fact. Let's get back to dollars and cents. We'll talk politics later! cool.gif

I have heard and I'm sure this may not be gosspil, that in 2005 Canada will not allow import of US leeches, currently around 90% of the leech sales in Canada are US leeeches.

I have also herd that the ability to make up for this with Canadian trapped leeches will be nearly impossible.????

The fact that gas has gone from closer to $1/gal. to closer to $2/gal. in the last 5 years affects me more in terms of a trip than the increased value of Canadian currency against the US dollar.

It won't have any bearing at all on our winter or summer plans.

Actually, about 10-12 yrs ago, I made money with the exchange. I bear hunted every spring and would stop at the bank in Kenora to exchange $800 US. The exchange was 62 cents CAN to the US dollar. When I left a week later, the Can $ rose to 70 cents. I had approx $200 CAN to change back, I believe I made about 16 bucks.

The best place to exchange is at the Canadian bank.
