mtreno, the MN DNR regulations book page 58 says fish houses and portable shelters must have complete name and address, drivers lic# or MN DNR# displayed on the outside in letters at least 2 inches in height. Your name and address still have to be on the outside but you can choose between your Dr lic# and the MN DNR #.

On ours it's just

E. Johnson

D. Sand

L. Mattson

And the tag on the door. Maybee it says Cokato, I'm not sure, we built it 3 years ago. We've never had any trouble with CO's but now that I think about it we've never been checked while out on the water. I'm not saying that the way we did it is right, but just that as long as your shelter tag is on it, they ususally dont make too big of fuss of it. My portable has drivers license # and shelter tag, also never had a problem.

Riverrat, I posted exactly what it says in the 2004 MN Fishing Regulations. I dont know if anything changed but thats what it says. I understand what you mean by vague when it says name, address and Dr lic# OR MN DNR# but I guess the interpitation is up to you I put my name, address and DNR# on my house its easier than getting a ticket.

When I got issued a D.N.R. number, I painted over my name and Address on all my houses, been checked numberous times by con. officers from winnie to my local area, never was questioned about the I.D. on any fish house.

On my perm house, I put the name of the town closest to my lake on the side of the shelter(even though I don't live there). If the locals think you're from around town, they tend to mess with you less. It is not illegal to do this.......

To avoid the confusion I put name and town and license # But now that we can use the DNR # I am taking off the license # and using my DNR #. Not only do I have my bases covered, my friends can find the house...

So if I understand some of the posts here, you can use only your MDNR# on the side of your portable. In regards to vague, I had an english instructor read the verbage and he said the way it is written is that you need your:

1. Name

2. Address (which would include city)

3. Driver Lic. # OR MDNR#

This makes for a big sign on a little portable.

Straight from the book...

All shelters, which include dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have the complete name and address, driver’s license number or Minnesota DNR number of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height. Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing must be licensed, except that a license is not required on border waters with Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota. A tag, furnished with the license, must be attached to the exterior in a readily visible location.

The comma between address and driver's is basicaly creating a list. Meaning you need this, this or that. Other wise it would read name and address AND driver's license number or Minnesota DNR number

That's my story and I'm sticking to it tongue.gif

I believe driver lic # or DNR # is sufficient. But the language is written, it could interpret as it requires your name AND one of three: address, driver lic #, DNR #.

I emailed the DNR and here is the response. Only one of the three is needed.

You have 3 options.

1) Name and address

2) Drivers license #

3) MDNR #

Any one of those 3 options is legal. You don't need 2 of them.

OK, I think we have this one cleared up. Now, does anyone know the answer to this one. I have my MDNR # on my portables, however this year it was my buddies turn to buy the shelter tags. Do the number have to match. Meaning this year our shelter tag MDNR # is not the same as the one on the side.

I know in the future, I will just buy the tags and he can pay me when it is his turn to buy.

Tight Lines.
