What Kind of License for Portables?

You will need only one of the following: drivers licence nunber, DNR number thats on all your fishing and hunting licences or your name and address. The DNR number is the easiest to use. And then you need to purchase your shelter licence of course. Have fun in your new house!!! Mike

I just got checked today for my shelter license as I was pulling it off the ice. I had everythin, but it got me thinking because at this time I was only using it to pull goodies to and from my permanent shelter.

If a person isn't actual;ly fishing out of it and they don't have it set up, can it still be considered a shelter? Just curious. I would doubt that someone would have a portable, and to use it but not license it because they were only pulling stuff out on the ice with it, but it just got me wondering.

And then, what about those shacks that attach together. If they are attached together, is it considered one shelter or two?

gees the dump I think about when Im out fishing....apparently they werent biting too good wink.gif

I dont think this is correct. Better check regs on this quote. I think you must have Name, Address and either DL Number or DNR Number (one or the other with Name and Address!) NOT JUST A NUMBER, that would be way to logical for anything regulated by the politicians.......... blush.gif

1) You only need your DNR number. This is wisest, as it won't reveal to much about you, yet tells the C.O. exactly who you are.

2)Dangerous ploy, trying to not license the shelter if you don't pull it over. Eventually, you'll pull it over you.

3)If the houses are zipped together, you only need one license. Again, probably a bad idea. A ticket costs way more than a shelter tag.....

This is straight out of the 2004 Minnesota DNR fishing regs booklet on the web:

"All shelters, which include dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters, placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have the complete name and address, driver’s license number or Minnesota DNR number of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least 2 inches in height.

Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing must be licensed, except that a license is not required on border waters with Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota. A tag, furnished with the license, must be attached to the exterior in a readily visible location."

I think people are wondering how to put it on the portable house without doing so permanently. Some houses have clear sleeves to put them in and some dont. Some people use their name and adress and others just the DNR # from their fishing license.

Myself I have either cardboard or paper with my name and adress on them in a clear waterproof sleeve. I put this in the clear sleeve on my house. Then I put the sticky license on a plastic card of the same size and zip tie it to the door zipper. I use the name and adress so people who walk by my house know its mine. If I dont want others to bother me Ill just use the DNR #.

I have info on a small piece of plywood that I just sit outside by the door. My dad does it the same way and no one has ever said anything to us. It also makes it esier to move it from portable to the next one. CO's have stopped by and have never said there is anything wrong with so Ill keep doing it that.

Its too bad the DNR can not speak english. 100 of us could read this and come up with 100 variations.

Its probably that White Bear High School I went to. Maybe should have attended class a little more? shocked.gif

I'm going with the DNR number and nothing else. Come and get me Marty!! tongue.gif

LR: It sounds like just going with the DNR # is adequate. I emailed the above quote from the DNR regs to a CO and this was his response.

"All you need is one of the mentioned. Your name, complete address (including ST #), or MNDNR #, or MN Driver's License #. Hope that answers your question. Phil S. Clay County Conservation Office"
