Yote huntin with 30-06?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used a 30-06 for yote huntin? If so what bullet did you use? I do handload, so I can work up some loads. I also have a Ruger mini 14 ranch rifle in .223 but it does not have a scope on it, not sure if that matters. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't worry much about a scope if you can get the song-dogs in close. They never stop moving, and open sights might be an asset under 75 yards.

If you don't care about the pelt, who cares what you shoot yotes with? If you do, I'd use a light, jacketed bullet.

I also have a Mini 14, am going to be glass bedding a new stock on it. Have used my deer rifle in the past for 'yotes(.280), is nice for longer shots, I use the same loads as I do for deer. I generally use the Mini 14 when chasing 'yotes with hounds and the deer rifle when calling. Good luck.

The 30-06 will work well but the bullet needs to very light. I shot a couple with my .7mm and did not scale down the ammo. Well it stops them quite well but there is not much left for a hide with 175 grain. I did not care about that part just wanted them down.

Scope might help if you are used to shooting with one but if they are close you may want to use open sights. As stated they rarely quit moving and that makes it more challenging.

I hunt with a group of guys that use a wide variety of rifles including .222, .223, 22-250, .243, 25-06, and 7mm. I will tell you that any of these guns can ruin a pelt. I think it matters more on what type of bullet you shoot. I have seen a yote shot by a 25-06 in which the bullet zipped right though (minimal damage)and I have seen one shot by a .222 that put a hole the size of my fist.

One thing is for sure though, we need snow! Get the ground white and the sloughs filled up and we'll get it on!

Thanks for the info. I have some 110 grain HP’s and 125 grain Ballistic Tips already loaded for the 30-06, that should do the trick. I’m not going to reload for the Ranch Rifle though. I have plenty of the 55 grain SP and FMJ’s on hand. I’m hoping to get out and give it a try this winter. smile.gif

Pistolero - If you decide to fart around with some loads for your Mini, I've done lots of research and the general consensus is that the heavier bullets(60 gr and up) are most accurate due to the rate of twist in the Mini's barrel. Also know where you can get a trigger job done if you are interested. Lots of yote tracks in the woods today when I was deer scouting.

Anybody know about the saboted 50 grain bullets for 30-06, I saw them in a store awhile back but havn't been able to find them since. Not sure who all makes them or what the numbers are on them.

It's the 30-06 Springfield Accelerator 55 grain PSP. I have never used them, but have seen them in stores also.

i heard about those, but u cant shoot them out of a semi-auto because of the lack of pressure-so says the guy from remington. the smallest grain size I have found are 125s. I cannot reload my own, so i'll probably shoot the 125s.

good luck
