DeerCain or...?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used this stuff? Or something similar? Isnt it just salt? Can I put something like it out now or in the next few weeks? or is it too late? Is there something better that someone can recommend?

Is it a gimmik???

I am thinking about hunting some land way off the beatin path and I dont have unlimited time to scout things out. I will only be able to make it back there 2 or 3 times between now and deer season. I know there are bucks in the area and I am wondering if this stuff will keep them around.
Does it make sense to use this stuff??

Thanks for any help!!

If it's cheap enough go for it, what does it hurt?

I've heard mixed results on it. My cousin bought a bottle of the liquid once & dumped it near a stand that had tons of deer traffic already & they never touched it. I remember another guy saying he put it out & they started eating a hole in the ground like a good salt lick.

Currently I've got one salt lick getting hammered, while some others aren't. In my experience it takes a while to develop a good salt lick, but you have to start some time.

Currently I have:
-Salt blocks and trace mineral blocks in one spot
-deer co-cain in one spot
-bionic buck minerals in one spot

The only area even touched all summer was my salt/trace mineral location

I have contacted the makers of Bionic Buck minerals, and they said they have had less than a half dozen complaints about the product in over 8 years or something like that.
I am starting to wonder if these are a bunch of games with these products. But, I am sure its gotta have some merit for somebody somewhere. I just have not seen the results.
Its never too late for mineral supplements.

We use the deer co-cain stuff in the powder form-just put some on the ground close to a trail and the deer are going NUTS over the stuff. I think the key is to put it where the deer will find it. ie. in their trails. We've been using the stuff for three years now, and have a hole in the ground 4x4 and 3 feet deep! Don't know what's in the ingrediants, but it sure isn't just salt!

Here is the text from the hunting regs exactly as written:

HUNTING METHOD RESTRICTIONS o
Bait
• No person may place or use bait for the purpose of taking deer.
“Bait” is defined as grain, fruit, vegetables, nuts, hay, or other food
transported and placed for the purpose of attracting or enticing
deer. This restriction does not apply to foods resulting from normal
or accepted farming, forest management, wildlife management,
orchard management, or similar land management activities.
• Liquid scents, salt, and minerals are not considered bait.

Thanks for all the info. I think that I will definitely try it this year.

So the deer like it. But does it keep the deer around an area? If I put some out this weekend, Should I continue to check it and put out more between now and opener???

Sorry for all the stupid ??'s, but I am a rookie when it comes to using this type of stuff. I am trying to get an advantage, since I am hunting a new and relatively unfamiliar area. I have had good success the past 10 years hunting a very familiar area, and havent needed/wanted to use anything like this before.

Have used the Deer Cain for several years. I believe the most important variable is the soil composition where you place it. We have spots it never got touched and others a couple hundred yards away where they've pounded it. I'm believing clay soil is best, and sandy or black dirt is less favorable - still trying to figure it out. Have heard positive reports from the salt/rock chunks from Utah - don't remember the name or company, but this is the first year I've seen the stuff.

I've used different types salt blocks, minerals blocks, etc. By far from what I've notice the DeerCain stuff works really well. What I do is make an indentation in the ground about 1yrd squared by 3" deep, then pour in the DeerCain the powered form or mix with water. Give it a couple weeks and the deer will make it a 1' or deeper hole. Seems like they really dig down for the stuff. I would also put a salt block near it too.

Good luck and hope this helps

I've heard of softner salt producing the same effects. Just dump it on the ground and the deer love it. They'll dig a hole. I suppose if you use softener salt you'd want a pure salt and not one filled with rust buster or something. Probably a pretty cheap option. I've never used it, but I might this year.
