Took her on her first canoe trip.

Did not paddle far at all (still too big for my canoe), just a couple old dogs hanging out around camp and doing some hiking and exploring.  Quality time with a quality dog.

Sad to know the time is coming.  Have you thought about getting a new pup after?  Some folks don't wait and have the old one help make the transition easier with them both for a while.

Hey now, she ain't gone yet.  :)

She's an only child, we discuss the possibility of a new pup quite a bit and always come back to "No."

Thought about bringing the long gun.  But the only grouse we kicked up was on the portage from the lot to the lake, kicked it up twice because it returned to it's thumping log in between trips down the portage. I'm guessing the trails close to the campsite are popular with grouse hunters. But I didn't hear much gunplay all three days, only one duck volley Saturday morning. Never seen a duck but I heard some wing by as I was still sleeping bag bound Friday morning. Had the pistol along, but was never given the opportunity to get me a Cornish game hen.

I'm always tempted to try stalking the woods with a Ruger 22 pistol.

I've only attempted it once and scored from maybe 10 ft away. And my first thought was "OW.....my ears."

Just taking a different path back to camp, I said "Wait a sec."

Of course she turned towards the back wondering who we were waiting for.

I like that one better than the one where she is facing me.

Warm enough up here to have dragon flies still flying around.

I was surprised by the amount of flying insects around last week.

I still thinks it's unfair that you participate in this thread, and thought about you as I was driving out of Ely, how does one not take great pics around here?!

;)

Today is the 20th anniversary of my 7+ lb largemouth.

4 legit 6+ pounders and a couple dozen 5's since then.

The guy who currently holds the state record largemouth said that a 7 lb largemouth is a once in a lifetime bass in MN, and that's holding true every year that passes by for me. But I'll keep trying.  :)

I never weighed or measured that one in the pic but she was possibly the fattest largie in that size class that ever caught.

I had a goal for several years to break 7 in MN or WI and, unless that stump did, I haven’t with a largie.  (2) 6-14’s officially plus another (8) confirmed 6+s.  The biggest shock for me was my smallie that tipped the scale at 7.5lbs.  From where else but Ely…

Come to think of it, they were on the same bait too.  Silver/Black F 18 original Rapala.

A 7lb largemouth in Minnesota is very attainable.  I've caught 2 fish over 7 in the same month.   Same lake.  And its probably significantly shorter growing season up here where I fish.

Well… I’ll have to disagree with the use of “very” in that comment LOL!  But yes, definitely attainable.

Mark Raveling.  I fished several of the same tournaments as him and is son, Shane.  They were a tough combo to beat and it was usually down to them or the Capra’s for the win for years.

I entered the Big Bass World Championship for a few seasons after a friend of mine won a berth to it by catching a 7-15, I think it was, from WI.  He taught me a lot about fishing for big bass.

I was qualified first from MN one year with a 6-4 for a while before Mark came in at the buzzer with something like a 6-6?  Funny thing was, I had heard Shane got one over 6 not long before that!  Dang, that burned!  I was sure suspicious but Mark was very capable of getting one like that and his registration checked out, so tough bounce for me.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
