Were did the grouse go?

Was seeing good numbers before the storm and went out recently afterwards and nothing. Is it too early for them to burrow under the snow and is there enough for them to even hide under?

This time of the year till the end of season I head for the swamp edges and when the swamps freeze up I go in after them. Of course if you have a nice sunny day then head back and walk tote roads. Pines are another place to look if it is blowing out. Need a lot more snow before looking for deep hiding grouse. If you are riding an ATV get off it and walk, you will kick up far more birds instead of driving by them. Good dog is a bonus.

I used to see grouse every time I went out. The last few times since the snow I haven't seen anything. I was starting to believe they flew south for the winter

I saw 2 during deer season, both were in 5-8 year old clear cut with heavy aspen re-growth.

My list trip out deer hunting I saw 5 on small parcel I was hunting.  They were hanging out in the alder brush.  Although my uncle has declared them off limits to me so they'll live to see another day.

I saw quite a few this morning in trees eating buds. They must know cold weather is coming. I've already cleaned the shotgun and stored it so we're calling it a truce till next autumn
