mnwild14
What type of dog do you use for hunting Grouse? I am just curious as to what people are using. I am reading a book which said that only 4.9% people use labs. The top were English Setters, Springer Spaniels and I will have to look at what the order and list of the top 5 again. The book did a survey and also found out that using a lab wasn't much better than going with out a dog, with respect for flushing the birds. I will have to get the statistics and add them to this. It was a book published in 2003.Results (as of 9/29/04 10:31 p.m.)Total 28GSP -- 6 (21%) English Setter -- 5 (18%)Labs -- 4.5 (16%)Brittany -- 3 (11%)Springers -- 2 (7%)Pointer -- 2 (7%)Golden retriever -- 1.5 (5%)Dalmatian -- 1 (4%)Poodle -- 1 (4%)Deutsch Drahthaar -- 1 (4%)Vizsla -- 1[This message has been edited by mnwild14 (edited 09-30-2004).]

schaapj
I use a springer, but I've heard some say the pointers work better for a more predictable hunt. Personally, I say if you know how your dog reacts when they get on sent it doesn't matter if you have a flusher or a pointer.[This message has been edited by schaapj (edited 09-08-2004).]
Guest
When I ws younger and living at home with my folks, I used to hunt with my Mom's poodle mix. Dog was great for grouse. No formal hunt training, ran a perfect zigzag and retrieved to hand.

Swamp Scooter
I have used the Vizsla with awsome success over the years. Have hunted with a few English Setters and they so well too. If it was going to be a flusher I would say the springer. But my Chessie does an excellent job on them now and really likes the walk to the blind as she hunts the pesky grouse all the way.The key is to have a dog that you can control or know full well they are broke well enough to point and hold. Too hard of a cover hitter or a far ranging flusher will be more trouble than it is worth.
Roosterslayer05
Golden retriever, best nose out of all the flushers and seems to quarter closer than labs. Dalmations??? The meanest dogs I have ever met in my life were dalmations, man are they nasty, i sure wouldent risk geting one for hunting because of there awful temperment. My uncles lab also is a good grouse hunter but wonders a little too far sometimes.

TheGuy
I have a friend that goes through the thick stuff real well. You have to push him a little at the end of the day and he gets snappy when you tell him to get back in there and push that thick stuff. It works out good for me.------------------Get the Net!! ikes71
GSP, but he does a lot better at pheasant and quail hunting. Although he is starting to get pretty old, he still gets wound up as the nights get colder.
GrouseHunt'R
I will be heading to the woods this Saturday with my English Setter. It'll be Brady's first time on grouse, so we'll see how it goes!
