Recommended Posts

...that you couldn't live without. (non-electric, or not corded)  Mine has to my instant read digi-temp gauge. Two in the kitchen, one with the grill....haveta check that meat temp!  Any other gadgets that really work well? One other for me...my meatloaf pan " as seen on TV" These really are heavy-duty, made well, and work GREAT. I love mine.

ok.ok  mr do it right!!!!!!:P I cant think of anything that's favorite. I would venture to say it would be a spice rack I had my son in law make. its made looking for spices a whole lot less stressful!

frankly mine is my computer.  Even if I'm making a pretty normal item I will look it up and see how others make it and maybe tweak things or just because I enjoy reading cooking stuff.

second item is my wife who generally cleans up.  I clean as I go often but it's nice to buss my plate pat her on the rear, get scolded and walk away.

As gadgets go, not counting knives and pans and tongs and spatulas, the instant read themometer is right up there.  Oh, and my silpats.

What is a silpats???

That's what I need is a spice rack, it's a pain to take half the stuff out of the cupboard above the stove just to find what I'm looking for.

I'd say that was one of the first things I was going to list, but then you'd try to tell me the "great minds think alike" thing....

Never saw a guy admitting to being a tool before.....

A Silpat is the brand name for a non stick silicone mat that goes in a half sheet pan.  Nothing sticks to it.  The knock offs seem to work just as well

Del- I think Reb is going to come over and stab you with an icicle pretty soon.  All they will find is you and a puddle of water next to your noggin by the time anyone finds you.

I use about three things in our spice cabinet.  Probaly $250 worth of stuff in there and it's in utter disarray.

I sure am, not too far away at all (30 miles). I think we'll be doing a smoked meat swap pretty soon ta boot (unless he already ate all of his jerky ;)).

If it works out that you don't need/want it, it'd have a happy home here.:D

Bottle opener :D

Since my wedding ring is my bottle opener I'm not sure it counts as a kitchen tool but it is very important.

It drives the wife nuts when I open bottles with my ring, honestly that's part of why I do it but don't tell her that.

Ya the meat thermometer is right up there along with my hot mitts.  For those that don't live in Andover, those are those gloves you wear  so you dont fry your hands when dealing with hot grates or cooking pans.  good luck.

we called my mom "asbestos hands".  I swear she barely ever used mitts.  I'm sure it's more legend than truth but still run with it.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
