I'm fairly certain it was 4. We were kicking it around on another site. Over the years, it's moved around from as high as 10 or so. They sold a ton of tags for those 4 deer.

Ok, scratch that. It's 4%. 6 deer killed.

Sooo....75 deer harvested by 2530 hunters, that accurate? How does that compare to previous hunts?

Not that many hunters for just one of the hunts, maybe combined.

Just going off my failing memory......half of recent year for harvest, with 25% less hunters, (and 10%? less land to hunt.)

Historically about a harvest of 100 most years, but with a few more hunters, and a little more land to hunt.

I am surprised at the harvested doe/buck ratio as I would think most in this hunt are go big trophy or go home empty.

How does this hunt work? Are hunters assigned places within Ripley to hunt? In my mind I picture something like Supermarket Sweep where a buzzer goes off it's a mad-dash by all the participants to get to find a spot and hang their stand.

I'm sure it's more organized than that. Or at least I hope so.

You have to get inline the line is about a mile long you can arrive the day before and camp which most do. Then the next morning they open the line up and its like supermarket sweep to find your spot. To be honest the two years I went it wasn't to hard finding a spot it was more if we moved mid day trying to find a spot was a pain in certain parts.

From MDHA via facebook:

Mild conditions greet hunters during first Camp Ripley hunt

Archers took a two-day total of 75 deer during the first two-day bow hunt at Camp Ripley Military Reservation near Little Falls on Oct. 15-16, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said.

There were 1,805 permits issued for the first hunt, with 1,282 hunters participating. Hunter success was 6 percent (down 2 percent from last year for the first hunt).

“This was one of two large archery hunts this year at Camp Ripley,” said Beau Liddell, Little Falls area wildlife supervisor for the DNR. “Hunters apply in advance for these hunts, which have become an annual tradition.”

Greg Meinert of Rice, and Juan Valencia of Elk River, each took bucks tipping the scales at 207 pounds. Of adult does registered, the largest weighed in at 128 pounds, taken by Daniel Myrum of Pierz.

The second two-day hunt is scheduled for Oct. 25-26. The DNR coordinates the hunts with the Department of Military Affairs, which manages the 53,000-acre military reservation.

Well my dad and I are still going to go this weekend. We discussed that the lower number could be to the confusion about the bonus tag issue and guys holding out for a big buck. The last few times at the camp we caught some slack for taking out does and doe fawns, but they wanted to reduce the numbers so we helped out. My dad will be holding out for a big buck, but me I am game for the first deer that gives me a good shot.

Also for any of you attending the 2nd hunt and would like to shoot the breeze. I think I will try to hit the watering hole on base not sure on what time yet seeing I will be waiting on old man to get his gear before we head up on Friday night. Saturday I believe they hold a dinner for something and that is where I will be eating. Good Luck Hunters may Mr. Big be yours

My question was rhetorical....the only entity that wanted to ruin the Ripley hunt was one guy...Beau Liddell, the DNR area manager. Ripley officials have been concerned about the lower numbers and lower quality of animals coming out of Camp. At one time it was truly a world class hunt. No longer.
