Scum Frog

Yes!

Fish it slow, lots of pauses.

Do not set the hook until you take up any slack (shouldn't be any) and FEEL the fish on the line. This alone greatly increases your hook-up rate.

That is the magic bait in my book. I get bass on it and pike. I have caught fish on that every time I use one, no matter what the conditions. But you do have to wait until you feel the weight of the fish to set the hook.

I like it when they slurp it all quiet, but you saw them do it and STICK DEM PIGS! Little piggy I saw you smile.gif

The only thing that's bad is reeling in 5 pounds of weeds/slop with the fish. Kinda like pulling a tire. But if they get free of the weeds watch out! Gotta love dem bass!

I would say that for the most part when fishing in heavy cover, which is what the scum frog was designed for.. COLOR would mean next to nothing. Abou thte only thing I do sometimes is add a little tinsel to the bait to give it a little flash...

I do however like that they are starting to use better hooks in some of the scum frog type baits.

I'm going to disagree about the color thing. My best one is the frog color one. I have tested the color idea, caught fish with one color, I knew they were there, went to a different color and nothing. Went back to frist one and wham, started catching fish. I have lots of colors and use them all.

Last year I tried Bass Rat. Had some of my funnest times fishing using these. Just like everyone else you need to wait before setting the hook. It really tests your patience when you see the fish blow up in the weeds or scum. White and chartreuse were my best colors.

I like the snagproof tournament frog the best. One trick I use with these is to buy bright colored ones like white and then I color the bottom black with a dry marker. That way I can see it good on top of the slop/pads/etc... and the bass can see the dark silohuette (spelling) better from underneath.

Some people also put rattles inside to add a little extra weight for easier casting with the heavy action rod needed for this type of fishing and you get the benefit of a little extra noise too.

The scum frog is one of the few baits you can fish the true "slop" effectively with. It is an easy bait to fish, there isn't a wrong way to work it. Just try to hold off as others said on the hookset (easier said than done). You'll get the timing down after a few fish, don't wait too long on the set or they will have you wrapped up in the junk. I keep the rod tip high when working it, that forces me to give the fish time to get the bait on the hookset as I need to come down with the rod tip to set the hook. I work buzzbaits the same way.

Me and my dad started fishing them last year. Its now my favorite bass fishing technique.

Its so exciting watching the pads behind your frog move as a bass follows. Or when they hit the top of pads real hard to knock your frog into the water, then after one slite twitch they inhale it.

Has anybody tried sumo frogs? I found them a few years ago while on Guntersville. they are mainly in the south and are origanlly from California. I noticed capras has a few of them now. They are weighted and have really nice owner hooks. Even with 65lb power pro you can launch these things a mile!

Bigger than a scumfrog.

They cast a mile, and have one hellacious hook in it.
I bought one because I just had to have a lure called Frogzilla.
Well, I use that thing, and it works. It has a couple legs that hang off the back, kind of like a plastic worm twister tails.

It hits the water after you cast it, and if there is slop, it makes a cool "thud".

Try one, you will get a kick out of it.

I fish alot of scumfrogs on the mississippi river. Once the pads and vegetation start to mat, there is not better lure. We use a very fast retrieve, almost like you would burn a spinnerbait, or buzzbait. We target the very clear backwater lakes with current nearby. I have better luck with the hookset with this type of retrieve, the fish totally crush it with a reaction strike. The colors that I prefer are the natural frog color and chartruese.
