Wisconsin Opener

Anyone headed to Wisconsin to fish opener? I've heard a lot of Wisconsin lakes are still froze. A family memeber has a cabin 50 minutes away from the cities and it was still iced over last weekend. Also does anyone know of any good bass lakes around Siren WI? I have a buddy with a cabin up there and was thinking about heading up there this weekend if the ice is off and would love to know if there are any decent lakes to hit around that area.

Every spring there is a bass tournament on Clam Lake apparently you can run up river and catch smallies too. I've fished Wood and Trade lake just west of there and done well on both once the water temps get at least into the 50's. I've got a club tournament on Bone Lake on the 18th. I'll probably head out there to do a little scouting the weekend of the 10th/11th

I'm gonna try apple river flowage. At some point this spring I want to hit clam lake, but I'll have to keep an eye out for those tournaments. Certainly don't want to be on the lake on the same day.

You can boat up the clam river? I heard there are trout in that river as well, or is that way farther upstream?

I will be up there. The primary question will be if we can get the boat out of the yard (it floods near the road). As far as ice goes, I think the ice out line will be very close to the Burnett/Polk county line, with some larger lakes in Polk still having partial ice and shallow lakes in Burnett possibly being open. Water will be ice cold, try to find something that will warm quickly if the sun comes out.

Craigums if you've never fished Bone it is a very straightforward lake. Quite a bit of good structure out there. Just be mindful that muskies will be spawn or just post spawn, so they will be frequenting the shallows, especially in the north end bays. Try not to spook them, and maybe have a way of handling them if one decides a bass bait looks like an easy meal.

I just got a report that the ice is off Lower Turtle (just south of Hwy 8 in Turtle Lake) so I would think most lakes should be ice free in Polk County.

FYI.....I believe there is a tournament this weekend on the Apple River Flowage in Amery. If you plan on going there be ready to compete with other boats. I'm headed to a small private lake near Burkhardt. The ice has been off it for at least a week but the water will still be cold. I plan on dragging jigs and drop shotting. We'll see what happens.

good luck that water is gonna be cold! I think you might do well on Mud Hen but the access can be very shallow sometimes a big problem. You might check it on the way over there, lots of great shallow water flats and breaks.

Thanks for the heads up about the tournament. We'll drive past and see what the deal is, there's a couple nearby lakes I was also eye ballin' as a backup.

How did you guys do? I found a jerkbait (a small one at that) near downed wood to be the ticket. Action wasn't exactly hot, and a majority of the fish were on the smaller side (males probably), but I did get a couple of bigger fish. This 20.5" girl was the biggest, and she saw a rough winter I think. Pretty thin and no eggs, but at least she's still swimming.

Hit Shell Lake for a few hours on Saturday. Still had quite a bit of ice in the middle so drove around it. Had to move a few times due to the wind blowing the ice shelf towards us haha. Water temp was 38°!! Ended up with three smallies and an eye though. Of course the two guys with me were the ones that caught them. Had some motor issues so the day was cut short. Thank god it was only spark plugs!!

Tried a small shallow lake in Burnett County that used to have some real nice bass. I didn't even get a wiff from a fish. Made my way into a bay on the west end of the lake and the entire shoreline is covered with dead fish. So, it appears winter kill was severe on this lake. Fished another small lake in St. Croix County yesterday and water was 52. Caught 1 and missed several flipping jigs in downed trees. It'll get better this week.

Fished a small spring fed Siren area lake. Water ranged from 39-44 through out the weekend. Ended up with 12 bass one pike......One large mouth 22" but skinny. Males were staged on breaks near existing vegetation and the big one was in shallow warm water. Bait could literally not move. The slowest presentation I have ever had to endure jerk baits and senkos. I would not call it deadsticking, it was beyond that.

No one else in our group caught a fish. It was mentioned before but 50 degrees is the magic number for activity.

Yes, not good. I'm not a fish expert but I'd have to believe that even if a lake didn't freeze out the fish were extremely stressed by the severe winter and late spring. I wonder if some fish will skip spawning totally? In addition, it seems like the younger year classes of fish will struggle. I guess it's Mother Nature's way to balance itself. It just stinks for us fisherman!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
