Agro, You will find quite a bit of variance in downrigger weights from what they are advertised, usually a difference of +/- of 1.5 lbs. It will still get your rigs down though!

Tunrevir~

If you ever weigh a weight from a weight set, the actual weight is slightly different than what's stamped on the weight itself

May not be life or death, but its stamped with 6# on the side. Lawn mowers and lawn tractors used to have a decal that said their "HP". there was a massive lawsuit and now they removed it.

How about you buy a 4x4 truck only to find out its 2 wheel drive? I know its grasping at straws, but is it too much to ask to get what is advertised or you pay for? I think not. Surely there can be a slight variation, but a pount is excessive when you are talking only 6# to begin with. I wonder what the "5#" ones weigh

I can understand being off and that since its a down rigger its not that big of deal. However being an entire pound off is really excessive in my book. I almost bet Cabela's buys these weights by the lb, and i wouldnt think they would not be to happy if they found/find out that whoever makes them has been over charging them.

Weigh all of your one ounce trolling weights or quarter ounce jigs one of the time. You will be very surprised at the variance.

With trolling weights it makes it very hard to be consistent from one rod to the next when your weights are off as much as 25 percent.

It should also be fair to show a pic of your scale showing it's tare weight (with nothing on the pan, it should show zero), and then another pic with an unopened 5# bag of sugar or flour. That way we can all calibrate and judge. This is not a criticism, just basic troubleshooting.

What would that prove? If a person wanted to be dishonest, it wouldn't be to hard using tare and settings to show the desired results. If a person wants to be dishonest, it can be done. While i can understand that there are all kinds of people on the internet, i posted the true results.

Here is how I actually came across the whole issue. I bought a mini laker walker down rigger from cabelas, came with a free Down rigger weight to use on my pontoon. i thought the weight was overkill, and thought i could get buy with some smaller cannon balls. So i bought a 1,2,&3 lb cannon balls from lead bandit and 3 1lb lead ingots. The ingots weren't in the nice 1 or 1/2 bars. I had a scale on my work table that i use to refill 1lb tanks for ice fishing. So I figured i might has well check the ingots that were puck shaped to see if they were a lb since they were cheap. while they were off either above or below a lb by a few oz. the three averaged close enough that i'd buy from them again. I then checked the cannon balls and they were all within a few oz. then i threw on the 6lb down rigger.......off by a 1lb. I was thinking about melting it down and using the lead for molding lead head jigs, but now i dont think i will because i dont know if the lead is pure or not or if it would mold well.

If the ball is that light compared to what it should be, it is probably very high in antimony. Its a lot harder, but lighter. Then there is the possibility cabelas slapped a 6lb sticker on a 5 pound ball.

Or their chinese supplier cheated them. Is antimony cheaper than lead?
