I Love the Northland Mooska Jig...Butt...

The Northland Mooska jig has quickly become my new go-to panfish jig. I have iced quite a few fish in the last couple months with this ultra heavy, ultra small jig.

Here is the only downfall, they are not verry durable frown I have bought around 20 of these new jigs, around half have already broke. Weather it be the hooks breaking or the body seperating from the hook, I just haven't had much luck keeping them in one piece for more than a few fish full-26589-43045-20140302_173502.jpg

This has been the fate of quite a few of my jigs frown At just under $3 a piece I don't know how manny more of theese I can afford to break.

I feel your pain Rick but gave up long ago....like after the 2nd one broke....you can tell how poorly they are made. Love the NL Impulse plastics but not the jigs. Discovered the new VMC panfish line of Tungsten jigs and plastics this year....love the jigs..... strong hooks with perfect gap....have not had much success with their Trigger X new panfish plastics yet but have not found a store that stocks the the full compliment or the options I'd really like to try. Been using VMC small tungsten glow jigs with the NL white/pink mini smelt with good success.

Rick,

try the Clam Drop Jigs next year. I haven't used tungsten before but I got some of these and they have became my go to jig for gills and crappies now. I may even they them during the open water season too.

Brad

I have the Clam line of Drop jigs wink not quite the same thing.

Jim, I'm a big time fam of the Heavy Metal jigs from Custom Jigs... I only wish they offered them in a UV finnish like the Mooskas.

Like you guys, I've been using various tungsten jigs and love fishing heavy metal. And I've grown tired of breaking the jig or the hook (not to forget being bit off by northerns). At $2 to $4 a piece, it's gotten a little expensive.

I was starting to think it was the product(s) and then started thinking about how I remove the jigs. I've heard of several various hook removers and toothpicks.

I saw that Clam has a Hook Remover for jigs to basically push the jig backwards. A while back I tried the Cold Snap Outdoors T2 Panfish Toothpick and have not broke a jig since. I'm sure a little more looking online, might reveal some other tools like this, but you might try one.

Norrthland is aware. They have been breaking since their inception.....at a rate more-so than others on the market. A hook remover is neat and all, but how do you get the memo to the fish not to pull, twist, and shake when hooked.....

Like most Northland products they are a knock off. The real Marmooska jig is a HT product and I can tell you from making 1000's of them (in a former life) they are better quality than what's in your hand.

I've had many of the real marooska jigs fail in the same way the lead comes loose and the hook eyes breakoff.

Its inherent to the design of any small tungsten jig. Solder is weak, actually very weak. Work that solder joint enough and its going to break.

I wonder if there would be a better process to attach that would be stronger such as laser welding or epoxy?

I had this same issue with the Mooska's last year. Brought a few and went back to lead in shallow water and used Custom Jigs tungsten jigs in deeper water. This year, switched to Clam's line of tungsten jigs and have only had one break and that was my fault. They've done the job this year and landed more fish on the ice for me than any other jig this season. I highly recommend giving them a try.....if you can find any.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
