Open Water

after getting my 1st real boat last year (2004 Alumacraft Nav. 165CS) and getting it dialed in and myself more and more confortable with it all summer I am one who is def. IMPATIENTLY waiting spring, I already had my 5 month pregnant wife promise me that we can go out panfishing before opener this year. Did I mention I purchased a new gps for it? (not top of the line but still my 1st boat, Elite 5 HDI)

seriously thinking about making an appointment to get the boat in to get a tune up and everything.

Is it wrong that I am already looking for signs of melting to our south on Modis?

Nope. I spent my entire Sunday walking along the Root River south of Rochester, and the highlight(s) of the trip were watching the snow melt off the trees, even though the temp was below freezing. Went back down today for a short walk and everything was covered in 6+ inches of snow. All the more fun watching it melt, right?!? smile

The closest Duluth has got toward spring and open water is that there was water on the streets today from melting snow. Lake Superior also has some open water along the north shore. 5 to 9 more inches of snow and high winds forecast for Thursday will deliver another reminder of reality.

I had a dream last night that I was fishing out of a boat, catching walleyes. Then I woke up. frown

It will be a month before my earliest open water spots start to open. When they do, I'll be out there dealing with freezing guides most likely.

It's been a brutal one up here in NW MN. We've had nearly 60 days of temps that didn't rise above zero, and we've currently got so much snow we're honestly running out of places to put it.

Interesting thing is, despite how bad it seems, the weather stats don't even put this winter in the top 65 worst winters we've had on record! Kinda hard to believe, huh? crazy

I don't really mind winter as long as it's warm enough to do stuff outside. This winter has been so cold it's been tough to even find a day for riding sleds. I'm really looking forward to warmer weather.

Friday I wound up the walleye ice fishing season at Red Lake. We intended to stay all day, but the wind and blowing snow had other ideas. We packed up early and almost didn't get off the ice. It was bad. I agree that this year has to rank up there with the worst I have been through during the 35 years I've lived in the northern part of MN. I hope the cold doesn't linger on, but it usually does following unusually extreme winters.

The December to February temperature will end up being top 10 coldest in the Twin Cities, probably 8th coldest (2nd coldest since Great Depression). Snowfall is actually only a few inches above average, it's just been so cold it hasn't gone anywhere. Hence the highest snow depth in over 30 years.

If you are considering season to date snowfall comparing to "seasonal" snowfall you are right, but we have all of March yet. We are within 2 inches of the season average for snow and the winter isnt over yet.

Last year we had like 2 feet of snow in March/April.

This better not be like that. I have 3 feet of snow on my roof and nearly 30 inches on the ground right now (protected yard, does not drift).

I looked at MSP airport.

So far the heating season is 6136 degree days, average is 5591

Snowfall so far is 57 inches, average is 40.2

I used msp because it has all the official data. Hibbing and Grand Rapids didn't.

Yeah, average to date is 40.2 right? 55 is seasonal average.

Definitely good to have the exta moisture to fill up lakes and rivers come Spring and hopefully relieve some of the drought concerns in the Central/Western parts of the state which went into winter with an Extreme drought situation.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
