Lights on a boat question

This may seem like an odd question, but are there restrictions in MN for lights on a boat? I know about the USCG required lighting for the bow and stern, but are there any regulations against me putting a flood or spot light off the bow while underway?

I would like to add some light off the front as sometimes I am travelling at night in waters that have hazards and such. Having some extra visibility may mean the difference between putting a hole in the hull or making it back to the dock safely.

I looked at the USCG manual and the MN boating guide and cannot anything saying its an issue, but figured I would ask before ordering new lights.

Thanks

I run a couple of HID lights. I suggest looking at HID or LED because the power draw will be about 1/5 or 1/10 what the power draw of halogens at the same lumens.

That being said, I have heard rumors that it's "illegal" to run with spotlights on, but I've never seen this in any rule book -- just some web forum. You know how these forums are -- you can ask a question and get 10 different answers. I guess I just figure logically more light shouldn't hurt, and in fact all the regulation manuals I see for boating say "at least" when referencing necessary navigation lighting, which sort of implies that they're documenting the required subset of lights, but that more is allowed. I guess if I ever get a ticket, I'll start worrying more about it, but for now I'm going with what I like, and I like to be able to see well when I'm under way in the dark.

I run the mn river quite a bit and have off-road lights on the front of my boat. I have never been hassled about them. I think it makes sense to run them when its a safety issue. That said if I'm overtaking someone or coming up on someone I turn them off.

cool idea with the RAM Mount.

I was going to RAM mount my lights also but they were going to be mounted to the bow, next to the Terrova.

Do you just turn the light 90deg when storing the motor?

I can leave the light on the motor and lay it down, but most of the time I just take it off.

As for the fog, even when the motor is in the water and the light is right on the bow, it's still hard to see.

Ideally you would have the light hanging off the bow right at the water line.

I posted similar question last yr on here and the cat guys informed me of getting flood lights.I ended up buying one and worked well.I had a hard time finding the access where it was pitch black. The flood light was great for this when I used it on the river.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
