Scrod
So I loaned out my auger and somehow the auger disconnected from the power unit. The auger portion is in 12' of water any suggestions on a retrieval method? Thanks
Chad Holst
underwater camera and fire line or tip up line....with a large treble. If you cant hook it, then a large disk magnet from fleet farm.
ski_otter
a good magnet and a spear hole
quacksmackMN
If the water is clear enough to see I would cut a spear hole with a chainsaw and try to snag the auger with a boat anchor or heavy hook...it wouldn't be easy but it might work
SFC
If you can spot the auger with a camera. Use conduit or PVC pipe thread tie wire through pipe make a loop when u hook the auger pull the wire tight to pipe n pull up. Conduit could be brought out in shorter lengths with couplers to get the desired length.

Good chance however that the unit didn't go straight down so you may have to search a 10-12 foot area.
fishwater
I got a couple of northneck buddies up near Brimson that swear by this method for success; they drill a single hole to start their season off, then proceed to drop the auger drill to the bottom of the lake. Everyone cracks open beers and whiskey standing around the open hole sipping in silence, waiting for some kind of signal. Usually something really odd happens before they drop the magnet and pick it up. If nothing happens before the hole skims over, the wait is over and the magnet is used. One year an eagle dropped a fish directly in the hole.
candiru
You can buy just the drill assemblies on-line. I think I would check prices before I went through a whole lot of time or expense to get yours back.
Raider4ever
Bill the loanee for a new one. If he hasn't offered up to buy you a new one, I wouldn't offer to loan him a thing from now on.
mntim
a good magnet and a spear hole I did this a couple years ago with a buddy's auger, spent 2 hours trying to snag it using an underwater camera. Finally got smart and went to tractor supply and bought a large magnet. Got back to the lake and had it out of the hole in 3 minutes. Scrod
Well we gave it a try with no luck. The bottom of the lake was extremely muddy. The magnet sank 3-5 inches deep into the mud. I'm guessing that the auger is imbedded in the mud. Now I need an 8" jiffy auger...Thanks for all of the responses. Good fishing
PierBridge
What Lake did this happen on? My magnets Would for sure pull it out of there.
blue_healer_guy
mark it with gps and get it in the spring.
jiggin9
This happened to my auger on Lake of the woods in 34' of water and I got it back. All you need is some inginuity and time. We used several lines (Tip up line) with magnets attached. I bought a strong magnet and used two others from old speakers. Keep at it. If you dont feel it drill holes around the one it fell through and start moving around til you do. Or like the last guy said, mark it and wait til spring. 12' shouldnt be too hard to retrieve. I blame my auger loss on the quick attach coupler made for jiffy augers. It definitely quickly de-attaches when you dont want it to. The auger was within a couple feet from the original hole. fsnrod
We got a two horse Johnson out of 12 feet of water and it was about two feet down in the mud with a length of 1/4 inch rebar with a hook bent in the end.
PurpleFloyd
My one of the poles from my friends flipover went down the hole and he used a camera and magnet to find it but the magnet wouldn't pull it out of the mud either so he took some PVC conduit and ran a wire through it, made a loop, and then when he got the loop over the pole he pulled the loop tight and it came right out. Try that before you go buy another auger.
NCLaker
Years ago when I purchased my first Strikemaster auger from D-Rock they recommened I put a couple wraps of electrical tape around the collar of the drill bit where the bolt is located for securing the bit to the head unit. He said it was a safety measure in case the bolt ever works itself lose. I guess it was good advise
Scrod
Thanks for all the incite. I have marked it for a spring retrieval. The biggest issue is the lake is an hour and a half away from my house and the gas back and forth is almost $40 the magnet was $20. So a couple trips up there and I can buy a brand new auger for $150...
jiggin9
I doubled my retrieval trip into another fishing trip. I fished for the first hour, took 2-3 hours to retrieve my auger and then went back to fishing again with a new outlook on my fishing life. Wish I still had the pictures from my old phone. Quite the day on the lake. The house near us thought we landed a hog when we started cheering after i latched my hands on that newly reclaimed auger!
