He liked it a lot. Visibility was beyond terrible we speared for about an hr. Gonna try again this week. Might run up to fish since it was so much clearer than the lakes around my house.

lakes don't even freeze back home so just being on top of the ice blew his mind!

It's the goose's birthday today so I decided to fix up an antique shop spear for her. It looked like it rode around in the back of a pickup for 50 years but the times were all straight. After some work with a brillo pad, a wipe down with some vinegar and a little bit of paint it turned out like so...

Don't tell her though, it's a surprise. wink

Wanderer and I chased a hot tip today. Gots to day, so far it's been a bit of a dud...

I did get the pleasure of pulling a Jeremy and joining the phone in the bottom of the spear hole club. cry

Funny you bring that up. I got a text to bring my big magnet to the lake today from someone you just mentioned. laugh

Gotta get me one. I'm pretty careful about checking to see if my phone pocket is zipped when I'm looking over the hole but I KNOW its just a matter of time...

I was glad to see N_g get his phone without getting too wet. smile

The hot tip sucked - let's face it. grin But the baked pike and perch were tasty. Just a good thing not many people were hungry!

I had an awesome day. Had a very big girl come in and stare at my live sucker. I fumbled around to get my phone out and snap a pic and the flash was on! She grabbed my sucker and took off with it and ate it. She instantly came back and went after my artificial and missed. Came back for it a second time grabbed it and ran out about 5 feet of line before she spit it out.

I hope she comes back tomorrow!

Pic is poor and does not do her justice.

I need to find me one of those "rare earth magnets" that merk was showing off at the gtg... they take up a lot less space than the big one I used to use, and a little para cord on it should be able to retrieve just about anything that goes kerploop...

MJ almost had my nephew's game boy at the bottom of his hole last week.

Amazing how easy it is to drop things down the hole, it's almost like they jump out of your hand and try to go for a swim.

On that note many thanks again for letting me use your house MJ. My brother in law and his boy really enjoyed it. My sister said "I will now hear the story about spearfishing for the next 6 months every time we see someone new."

I took my brother in law out one more time on Saturday morning before their plane left later that evening. Small lake by my house here in the east metro. We had a big girl come in the hole. He took too long to throw and she swam away. That one is going to haunt him for a while. grin

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
