Spring turkey hunting applications accepted through January 10

Applications for the 2014 spring season will be accepted wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold and online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense from Wednesday, Nov. 27 through Friday, Jan. 10, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The 2014 spring hunt will consist of six five-day and two seven-day seasons. A regulation change in 2014 means hunters need to apply for only the first three time periods, seasons A through C. All licenses for the last five time periods, seasons D through H, are unlimited and available over-the-counter.

A second regulation change closes the portion of Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area (permit area 511) surrounding the wildlife office headquarters to hunting. The remainder of Carlos Avery will remain open to wild turkey hunting.

Wild turkey hunters interested in hunting this spring must apply at a DNR license agent, online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense or toll-free, 888-665-4236. A nonrefundable $4 application fee must be paid at the time of application. There will be an additional fee for Internet or telephone transactions.

Hunters who are successful in the drawing and choose not to buy a tag will lose the current year’s preference point for future drawings but not accumulated preference points from past years. Hunters who are not successful in the drawing will be eligible to purchase surplus turkey permits, which are sold on a first-come, first-served basis in mid-March.

Archery spring turkey licenses are good for the last five time periods in their entirety.

Hunters younger than 18 must purchase their licenses over-the-counter and need not apply for any season. All youth licenses are valid for all eight time periods of the spring hunt.

Prospective hunters may obtain an application information sheet at DNR license agents or view online beginning Wednesday, Nov. 27. Hunt information materials include a map of wild turkey permit areas, permit quotas, dates and information on changes.

Just got my MN done today and WI. Just trying to get through the deer season and fishing to take up time till it's time to chase Turkey's around.

Great for the changes for kids hunting and people trying to apply for tags can now just get one for D-H over the counter.

So I have no need to apply I can just buy the archery lic and hunt the last 5 season is that right??? Shot my first with a bow last year at 36 yards I think its more addicting then chasing a big buck

I'm new to turkey in MN so forgive me if this is a dumb question. I checked the regs and was more confused. I plan to archery hunt. I can buy over the counter and hunt the final 5 seasons and statewide? If I want to hunt in one of the first 3 time periods do I need to apply for a certain area? Is it worth applying for that early season in west cetral MN? I've never paid a whole lot of attention to turkeys that time of year. This is what I found in the regulations but this was in the over the counter area: Thanks

You have it exactly right. Archery hunters may hunt any open area throughout the entire last 5 time periods.

You must apply for any of the first 3 time periods, no matter what weapon you choose to hunt with. Is it worth it in your area? Only you can answer that question.

As far as whether it's worth it to apply for the late seasons I'd reply... sometimes. I've hunted every season with the exception of "B" in central MN and have shot birds during those time periods. Sometimes the early season can be fantastic and other times a bust. The early seasons are really impacted by the timing of spring and weather. Last year we were tromping through the snow during the "A" season and actually things really didn't start firing up until "C" season. A season our birds were still in their winter flocks and it was tough. Nice thing about the archery season is that you have lots of time which means you can hunt through slow phases knowing that there will be better days ahead. Also birds move and if they happen to be off the properties you have permission to hunt for a week doesn't shoot you in the foot.

508 has some nice birds but last years deep snow during the A season really made hunting hard.

That's true. I had trouble with the snow in season B last year. Hopefully, this spring will be better weather. I applied for 508 A however I have no preference points so if I don't get drawn I'll be buying an over the counter for 508 D.
