MN Early Youth hunt success

I know the early youth season has it's share of controvercy attached, but anyone else have any luck on today's opener?

My 14 year old son and I went for the 1st time this season. We didn't see or hear a deer all morning. Evening we switched to a new stand with several active scrapes within site. Just before 6pm my son wispered "Dad"...I was hearing noise off to my side of the tree stand, so slowly turned that direction to look at what was making him so excited...Suddently I heard "Dad!" even louder and was kicked in the leg!

I turned toward him and immediatly saw the deer that had him so excited on his side of the tree about 70 yards out agressively raking a tree that he could just reach fully extended on his hind legs...I quickly whispered that he should wait till he dropped to the ground and turned broadside...which happened immediately. He fired a perfect broadside shot. I saw the buck hunch up and make a break downhill for about 20 yards...he then just stood there flicking his tail and looking around. After about 10 minutes he took a step forward, putting his head out of site behind a tree. I became worried he wasn't going down, so told Josh to take another shot. He hit him in the spine, dropping him in his tracks.

Main frame 10 point with stickers off both G2's making it 12 points total. Weighed in right at 200 lbs, with plenty of fat on him.

Congrats on a dandy buck.

We hunted yesterday in the am for 2.5 with out seeing 1 deer. Went back out at 4pm and sat till the end in rain with nothing to be seen. While we were gone inbetween the 2 sits yesterday, a buck had come through as I could see where he had cleaned up his scrapes as they were half leaf covered. No does or fawns at all to be seen. Baffling.

Raining again this am so we took off and will be back out this aft, rain or shine. The weekend weather look's to be less than desirable to say the least.

We are in a good looking area with alot of buck sign, had plenty of pic's on the trail camera but now, nothing. I guess I will blame the bad weather we have had.

We will just keep hunting I guess in rain as that looks to be the forecast. I was hoping for 1 decent day out of the 4.

We hunted public land this morning. Great setup with today's West wind as our backs were facing a small Lake. Both of my boys have hunted here before without seeing a deer. But I had faith in the spot as there are great trails in the grass with a few scrapes and rubs every time I walk back here.

So the older brother was duck hunting with gramps because he would rather bow hunt.

After sitting an hour without much luck I decided to stand up and stretch my legs. The blind has a zippered Window in the ceiling so I quietly opened it so I could stand and look around. Almost right away I spied a doe at 30 yards heading our way. He was really agonizing over shooting it, but neither boy has a"buck" yet and he decided to wait for one.

As soon as he set the gun down I noticed another deer, about 75 yards further and on the edge of the brush. I could see some bone on his head! Butnow we had a doe on alert at 25yrds.

Some how we managed to get Mason turned from 12:00 to 3:00 without the doe bolting. Now in shooting position all we can see is the head and throat patch. This .357 NEF single shot shoots a 3" at 100.

Finally the doe has enough and bolts. The buck turns his head and Mason shoots...

Sorry about the delay. Got rained out of the bow stand.

I was focused on holding the shooting sticks steady and let the kid do his thing. (He's a good shot.)

At the moment of the shot we forgot that the gun shoots about 4" high at 100 yards. Right in the temple, dead in its tracks.

Awesome stories and great bucks for both the boy's. I would like to give you both a pat on the back for handing off the tradition to the younger generation.

P.S I wouldn't have kicked you in the leg,I would have punched you in your tender bit's for that one laugh

Well, we sat for 3 hours until 6pm and I thought I should use my rattlin bag again. Approx 2 minutes later a 8 pointer was standing in the heavy brush and looking our way.

I asked Taylor if she saw it and she said yes.

I said when the bucks turns behind the tree, shoulder your gun and wait for it to walk by the tree's and when it gets by, I will grunt, the buck will stop and then you shoot. The buck was approx 65 yards away and it dropped in it's tracks.

Both lungs and the corner of the heart taken out.

No pic yet but I will get one posted.

Absolutely, positively awesome, harvey lee!!! Congrats to her and to you! I could tell by your e-mail that you are proud as a peacock-- just as you should be! Wonderful job to you both!

Thanks Scoot, I simply could not get this pic posted, one would have thought this was my first time.

yep, proud as can be of Taylor with her 1st hunt at age 12 and the buck she got. Taylor said to me, a doe would have been fine but a buck is alot cooler.

Taylor's smile about says it all. I asked Taylor if she was cold, she said yes as her teeth were chatering, then she said maybe not cold, just that excited. Taylor said after she shot, her heart was beating very fast, I told her that is what it is all about getting that excited.
