Agronomist_at_IA
After having one I really don't understand any of the hype about them. It's a really nice rod, but I think many manufactures are making a rod like them for $
holmsvc
Which rod did you buy? I have a 28 inch perch sh with recoil guides and it is much lighter and more sensitive than my st Croix and Mitchell rods. The only ml rod I have had that was close was the original Dave genz rod. I also have a 32 inch walleye sh that is great for fishing darters and big spoons.I am planning on buying another tb rod this year. I am debating between a quiver stick and a power noodle. Rope
I disagree! But,I have been wrong before. Tell us why you don't like them.
Agronomist_at_IA
Never said I don't like them. They are a nice rod. I just believe that you can pick up something comparable for way less money. I don't quite understand what all the rave was about.

I don't quite understand what all the rave was about. List some rods that you think is comparable for less? There are alconite guide versions for a lot less if you can't afford the cost of the recoils on the TB custom ice rods. The nicest ice rods I've seen that are not custom but marketed retail are TFO ice rods at about $40-$50.
PerchPounder
Depending on what rod you're using and how you're using it you might not notice much difference. I have several TB rods and bought a DH custom last year. There is definitely a difference between TB rods and most off the shelf and huge difference between a custom DH and a factory rod. Custom rods by TB, DH & TUC will make any store shelf factory rod lame in comparison to build quality. Plus the versatility of application & presentation are unmatched with a custom ice rod. Says the man with 3 bags full of custom rods BTW got any to trade for a Curado??? I own a few customs and yet to find a shelf rod that comes close to matching up, closest I have found is the Wicked by 13....

harvey lee
I onw numerous TB rods and yes, they are very well built with great components. With that said, do they ice more fish for me versus some of the other rods I own for less money or ones I have built myself, NO. Lusid
If you can find me a over the counter type rod that has the RECOIL NiTi guides. I'll move out of the custom realm in a heart beat.

They may not always catch more fish but with as short as the season is it is nice to have nice toys.. I have a few of the TB rods and enjoy my time on the ice with a quality product. amateurfishing
even a novice such as myself can tell the difference with sensitivity, backbone, & quality.....and yes I have iced more fish because of my PN's, excellent sensitivity for light biters and backbone that can handle bass/northern all with the same stick, I am proof! TUCR John
Really for $20. Any of the big three you are getting what you want. I really cannot think of a factory rod that can even come close to a custom rod.

Agronomist_at_IA
Please name said rods. Well I can name a few rods, but will it matter? I'm sure you'll come up with some bull chit saying they aren't. I've got an XML rod from cabelas. I bought it has a rod only for $20. When I put that next to the perch sweetheart, they are about identical. Handle, rod blank, rod guides. When I put them under load they react the same from what I can tell. I never said that the perch sweetheart was a bad rod. It is a very nice rod. I just don't understand all the hype on the thorne brothers rods after seeing one. DLD24
I was wondering if there is a big difference in nicer factory rods vs custom rods...I think its just going to be something I'm going to have to try for myself... I will be calling TUCR next week
kapp
no doubt the customs are nice but they can and will get broke and at $70 to $100 dollars apiece I question if it is worth it. Ice fishing is hard on equipment. You drag your equipment behind a 4 wheeler or snowmobile for miles over ice and snow drifts fish till after dark, tear down and put stuff away after dark. you are tired, you are wearing bulky clothes and boots, its well below zero and windy,i have 2 hard sided rod cases to protect my rods . i have gone years without breaking one, last year broke 2 customs... ouch. I think there are some great customs availablebut I don't think it at all necessary to catch fish, it's just creature comforts. the fish could care less what kind of rod you use
OnIce
That's OK. Some people don't appreciate filet mignon, and are perfectly happy with a top round steak. To each his own.
