First deer

Yesterday afternoon I took my son out on his first hunt. He has been with me several times, twice we have been lucky enough to harvest a deer. This time he was the hunter and I was the watcher.

We went to a blind overlooking a food plot we had put in just for youth season. It was a beautiful day just to be outdoors. It started off a bit slow with only a button buck coming to visit. Then we had a couple does pass just by the blind but no shots. With just 15 minutes of legal light left here he comes. It's the 8 pt we have on camera. He come straight into the plot in front of us. Head down feeding, not giving us a shot. Joe had the gun up and ready, just waiting. Finally the buck turned broadside. I leaned forward and whispered in his ear, "whenever your ready". The next thing I know the air is filled with white smoke. We saw him mule kick just before he disappeared into the haze.

I don't know who was more excited me or him. We had to take a deep breath and get our bearings before we left the blind. We left and got the 4wheeler and a friend. When we came back Joe was the one to find first blood. So we let him take the lead. After a short 50 yard tracking job we found his trophy laying next to the creek. I am so happy and proud of him. He helped with the field dressing and dragging back to the wheeler. Then stayed up late to help me skin and bone him. Did I say I was proud of him? He is my little man and I'm sure hunting partner from here on out.

The future of our sport depends on stories like this! Great story. Thank you for taking the time to make the outdoors a part of his life. I used to fish and hunt way more hours than I do now, but almost all of my hours now are with my two boys and somewhere down the road I am sure my daughter as well. There may be less hours spent a field now, but they are so much more rewarding now.

Congrats on a great deer, a great story and hopefully a lifetime of memories for both of you.
