Which F150 engine?

Recommended Posts

Regardless of what he is driving his statement of lag is erroneous. An engineer should understand that the eco boost uses high pressure direct injection at 16 psi and pumps the fuel load directly into the combustion chamber rather than the intake port eliminating any waste resulting in no turbo lag. Too make a statement such as he did without merit just demonstates a lack of credibility.

Very little of what you said has anything to do with lag.

I could point to numerous articles which always preface test results of the Ecoboost with "if you can put up with the lag" or something similar.

Turbos. Have. Lag.

Some just more, or less, than others.

Lmit is just another Chevy boy. He says no need for a turbo, but I do believe he is driving a truck with a turbo. A chevy truck at that.

I never said there was no need for a turbo.

What I was pointing out is that the uber self-conscious Ecoboost crowd soils their pants because they think that they have something special, as if the engine was developed at Skunk Works and uses some sort of alien technology. It's a 6-cyl with turbos that you pay more for and still don't get hyper-mileage results. Pure hype. Well done, Ford. smirk

It cracks me up how far some guys will go to justify why they won't buy a competitors product and prevent others from considering it.

I have no vested interest in what others buy, however I do like to share facts based on my personal experience with the product. That's what I posted.

This might as well be in sillytown if all you're gonna do is bash a product you don't own and post irrational arguments about why one product is succeeding over another. sheesh

I'm no engineer, but I've installed more turbos than most guys will ever drive, I can tell you that there is no simple way to completely eliminate turbo lag. The turbo is driven by exhaust flow and cannot and will not "boost" until the RPMs build and create exhaust flow that is sufficient enough to spool up the turbo, regardless of where the fuel is injected. That period of time is what turbo lag is. Electronic waste gates and twin/staged turbos have improved it to a degree, but until you can have instant boost when the throttle is opened you will have turbo lag.

Engine manufactures have started to go with smaller twin turbo applications to help limit any Turbo lag. It's not like they have a giant T-88 on these motors. I've never been concerned with any lag on this motor.

well if there is turbo lag I have yet to notice it. Have driven plenty of diesels in my day and you can feel it in them, (all 3 brands) I just can't say that I notice it in the ecoboost. I have yet to miss those 2 cylinders that some must have.

LOL, it only gets 20 going downhill.

talk! I have gotten 21 MPG with my Denali on multiple occasions. Granted its driving at a reasonable pace IE 65 MPH on main roads.

I just came back from Sioux Narrows, ON. Total trip roughly 700 miles and I averaged 16.4 MPG pulling my 19 foot boat. I was hauling the mail too making the trip in around 5 hrs. The poor guy in the F150 (5.4) was struggling to keep up and he got 10.2 MPG.

The GM 6.0 is a total gas hog, but the 6.2 is not.

LOL, "multiple occasions", thanks for proving my point. You are not consistently getting 10% over EPA ratings running ethannol gas, sorry. I have a 6.2L in my family so I know the deal. Its a powerful engine, but its not built to get high MPG's - that's what the 5.3L is for. And don't go by the electronic reading in the truck, either, that's not accurate.

I will agree with you that the Ford 5.4L is a slug though!!! smile

Multiple occassions meaning ones in which I drive at a respectable speed. Its consistent in that regard, I just dont drive "respectable" consistently.

I NEVER go by the meter on the DIC. Sometimes that thing reads lower than I actually got for mileage, but most times its higher.

You are not going to get the best mileage under all conditions and regardless of how you drive.

lets all face it there is no PERFECT engine to choose from right now. If someone would make a half ton truck that would pull a 6000lb load with ease and get 20 mpg doing it plus 27-28 mpg empty we would all one one no mater what brand it is!!!

No talk about a 6.2L in a F150? This fall I will be trading, not sure to what yet, drove a '14 GMC on friday, not that impressed, might have to look at a Ford again. The '14 had some improvements over my '08, but some things I disliked also. The fabric deal in the wheel wells is just strange, it really confirms the point that these "trucks" are made for highway use only. I don't see how its going to hold up with rocks being thrown at it. Many interior items directly were directly copied from the F150, along with the stupid woodgrain, I don't know who keeps making that decision. Anyway back on topic...either Ford or GM it will be a 6.2L I do know that for sure.

Actually, the new RAM 3.0L Diesel should just about do that. The downside is you'll probably pay more for it, since its a diesel (and the cost of fuel).

The problem I see with the Ram diesel is you can almost bet the price will be at least $6k-$8k higher than a gasser, now your looking at almost $60k for a 1/2 ton. Most of all it will still be a head hanger...

60K? Are you driving a truck or a Limo? I just went to the Ram site and a 4x4 SLT quad cab came up at 35k with more options than I would ever need and you can get them off the lot for thousands less than that. Granted, I went to the Ford site and a 4x4 SLT quad cab without loading it up came in at a tick under 40kand the Silverado LT 4x4 quad cab came in at a tick over 39k but that is still a long poke from 60k. A 2500 SLT 4x4 crew cab with the 6.7 Cummins priced out at 47,000.

I just looked at a '14 GMC 1500 crew with cloth, the sticker was $45k. Looked at new F150 Platinum also, $52k sticker. Yes I know that is MSRP. How is my pricing off? A 2500 4x4 crew for $47k is a plain jane.

My point is they will probably overcharge for the option and make it senseless to purchase, I guess we won't know for sure until it comes out.

I ended up buying a 2013 XLT with the 6.5 box and the 5.0. The salesman told me that the only way it would be worth it to me would be if I pulled anything relatively heavy often which I don't. I'm only 500 miles into it with mostly city driving but its still at about 16.5 for mileage. I really like the backseat room and so do the kids. I never thought I'd see the day that I drove a Ford and was happy with it but I guess some things change.
