Hey Scott,

I had a good weekend, but unfortunately wasn't even able to make it out turkey hunting, after Friday evening. I had big plans to shoot a turkey over the weekend, but a few things came up that prevented that from happening, not the least of which was my twin sister giving birth to a healthy baby girl, my first niece! So, I spent a majority of the weekend with their two year old son (my nephew) keeping him busy. It was a GREAT weekend for my family, but was not conducive to turkey hunting.

My season may be mostly over. I need to pull my blind, so I'll likely get in one more hunt before I head to Canada. I need to do grocery shopping, laundry, packing, check boat trailer bearings, etc...

I'll have 3 days to hunt when I get back, so we'll see if I have time then. Otherwise, I feel good. Twelve 4:00 mornings and many afternoon hunts. I gave it my best shot up until this point, and have no regrets. I think it's time start concentrating on hitting the gym and getting in shape for the main event of the year!!

Looks like the turkeys got the best of me this year. I'm thinking next year their luck will be running out!

Been a tough season, still hunting and will keep going till the end of the season. The birds just don't want to come out of the woods for me. I had my first Tom come out on Friday morning and stayed out at 120yds and gobbled at my hen and jake decoy. I purred a little to him and he turned around and headed right back into the woods from where he came from. I have had many hens in the field but the Toms just don't want anything to do with the fields. I will be out in the morning again, thinking I might move my blind onto a old road bed in the woods where it sounds as if they have been traveling. Good luck all!

It sounds like a very successful season to me. One of my favorite whitetail seasons I've ever had finished with an unpunched tag after putting in one heck of an effort. I finally got a shot at the buck I'd been chasing- a really nice typical 10. He was broadside at 15 yards and I missed him clean. It was a chip shot that I couldn't miss, but I later discovered my sight scope had wiggled loose and moved a bunch. Like your season, Jim, it was a great effort and the chase was one to remember, but I didn't fill my tag. A complete success in my book (your season and mine).

Yes, I'm excited to hear how your "main event" goes! I'm glad to hear your wheel is doing better and I know you'll be in good shape when you go. Push hard in June, July, and Aug, then scale back a little at the beginning of Sep. You'll be dang glad you did when you're up there in the thin air and there's a bull bugling his fool head off 600 yards away and 800 verticle feet above you.

well i feel a little better that im not the only one having problems. sad to say my dad going to check blinds has had more bird action than i have. and i've been out almost every day except the friday, sat, sunday. the last 2 weekends. been out most mornings to 4pm and only had one tom. that got cautious right about 45 yards... not exactly the shot i was wanting to take with my bow at least not a clean shot. hoping to hunt tom. most of the day and wed. the morning. whistle if only i was able to hunt longer wed. sounds like a nice day to be out there.

Good Luck guys ,I have yet to hear a gobble I have seen a couple of hens but that's it.

On my way to the woods Friday afternoon I saw a nice Gobbler in the refuge and it was looking at me like he knew he was safe. I hope to get out this afternoon

Got out this afternoon to a fresh spot. I saw birds here in the late morning over the weekend. Had to go after work. I did see one turkey but it ran the way it came when it saw the dekes.

I made it out Friday morning, Monday afternoon, and Tuesday morning with my 9yr old daughter. Two hens on Friday, nothing on Monday and two toms at about 40 yards this morning. I called them in and they followed the field edge to where we were in the woods. I don't know if they didn't like the decoy or saw my daughter move somehow in the blind. They would not close the distance and left in a hurry. I was pretty excited as they gobbled the whole way in, I figured the shot opportunity was a given. One more chance in the morning for her. I wish I could set up on the field but have never needed to and never tried to get permission.

Tag soup for me, as well. Fortunately, it tastes like fresh morels and oyster mushrooms! Time to get ready for September's elk hunt. The turkeys can wait until next spring. I will get even with them!

Ditto and at least I heard one lone gobble yesterday. I'm waiting for next spring to connect, who knows maybe I'll try a fall bird this year.

We have had two poor years in Wisconsin now. We see many birds in the fall while deer hunting, but when spring rolls around they disappear. I think this year I will try to get a fall tag over there.

I did not make it out on Wednesday like I planned with my daughter. It was her hunt and all about her and she has been excited to go every morning. So when she started crying when I woke her up at 0400 I knew something was up. She told me she was just to tired to get out of bed and knew it was our last day to hunt. I assured her we have many more years to hunt together and we would try in the fall. She was satisfied with that and was back to sleep in no time.

So our free govt cheese child turkey license will be added to my older daughters and my turkey to make a really big pot of meaty cheese and turkey stew. smile

I hunted 1.5 days in pouring rain with nothing to show for it. I heard a stat on the radio that 65/88 days this spring to date have been overcast. We just haven't seen the warm sunny days that birds like. Combined with a lot of precipitation (snow for the early hunters, rain for the late season) and a bunch of wind and we've had some tough conditions.

Went out last night to pick up blinds as my son had to work. Looked out and there were 6 jakes just milling around and I thought I saw a strutter but couldn't tell for sure as I saw part of it below a rise. Seems I saw more turkeys the few moments I was in the woods than I saw all of the hours I was in blind during my season. Oh well, our group went 4 for 6 so that's still not bad.

Still trying to figure out how I'll prepare my left over tag this year. wink
