Which Sled

Looking to pick up a portable sled at the ice show this weekend, anyone know of any deals?

I kind of have it narrowed down to 2 different ones:

Otter Pro Medium $99 64"L x 32"D x 15"H. Weight: 32 lbs.

Or the Clam Nordic Large $89 74" x 40" x 18" (no weight listed)

...anyone better than the other? Input much appreciated, thanks.

Some details might be helpful. Are you planning to pull it by hand or snow machine? What equipment will you be hauling?

I really like the Otter Medium combo (sled, hyfax, tow bar, cover) that I purchased for $200. It's a solid unit and holds my Bigfoot 4000T, two chairs, 20lb LP tank, Big Buddy heater, rod bag, and some misc items well.

The otter sled is tougher because of how it is made. Otter molds resin into the exact shape of the sled. Clam takes a large flat sheet of plastic and forms it into shape by applying heat and pressure.

Clam sleds are essentially prestressed, every bend and curve is weaker than the surrounding straight and flat sections.

The Otter sled manufacturing process is superior for durability. (They melt beads to form the sled, all other manufacturers take a sheet of plastic, which has already been melted once to be created, heat it back up and press it into a mold to bend it into a sled).

Take a strip of plastic and bend it multiple times, it weakens! Or heat and cool it multiple times, it gets brittle!

The angle of attack on the front of the Otter sleds is better too for what it's worth than others for towing/cutting through/riding on snow IMO.

I have the otter pro medium and it is pretty cool. I pull mine behind my snomobile. Get all the stuff for it, hyfax, cover, tow hitch. All quality stuff. I pack mine with my auger, two rod bags, heater, fold up chairs, a bucket or two and then if it is cold out I throw my old suitcase style frabil on top. It is plenty big enough for everything and once I get done it is light enough to toss in the truck.

I just bought the same kit that MNCPRGUY mentioned at Fleet Farm this weekend.......$130.00 plus tax! I found it on there HSOforum and they honored the price at the store. Not all locations still had the kit, so you may have to call around before you go.

That is an amazing deal!!! I can't find it on FF's site, but if you can get the combo for that, I'd buy every one they had! Otter has it listed on their HSOforum for $200 and I still think it's a great deal! That sled will be with me for the rest of my life!

For those looking for a good deal that can't get these $130 otter medium combo deal, I suggest going to costco. They have a "snow trek 75" sled made by pelican (74 inches long, 30 inches wide) with hyfax runners, a cover, and a rigid hitch for $150.

The sled is a pretty heavy duty looking unit. At least as heavy duty as the otter sleds. Sled weighs 34 lbs (the otter medium weighs 32 I think)

Not sure if you will find this deal at the show this weekend?

If fleet farm was selling them at $130, you know there is profit to be made at that price. As such, if I was at the show and I wanted one of these, I'd be running around offering $130 to everyone that had them until someone bites. No guarantees, obviously, but there's a starting point anyway for negotiations. You can also just tell the folks there that want to charge ya 200 that costco has the pelican combo (almost the exact same setup, just a longer/skinnier sled) for $150. Armed with that information, if you can't get one for somewhere in that $130 to $150 range at the show, I'll be surprised.

The $130 price was marked "clearance" on the FF HSOforum. Reg price was 189.

I spent a good hour talking with FF customer service and various stores trying to find it. When it was added to cart they wanted 189 for shipping alone. grin

Finally spoke to someone who knew where they had them.

But yes, I don't see them listed at all on the HSOforum anymore.
