c0untryf1sh3r
Why not run the genny in the morning for a couple hours to make it through the day then give the batts another hour or so burst as it gets closer to nightfall to make it through the night or most of the night? I personally dont mind when people run their gen during the day but at night its a different story..
eyehunter78
Why in the world would you want to run the generator a prime times. (early morning and late afternoon) That would p!ss me off the most. Be considerate and run them noise hawgs during the lull of the midday! walleye977
I see there's a lot of different view points with gen's. I plan on using it after the sun goes down and the walleyes stop biting on LOW for a few hours like 6 to 9 plus I try and stay away from others but if you want to set up next to me don't cry
MuleShack
From the posts it sounds like the people with the loud generators keep others away from them. Don't know why they would ever want to get a quiet one when their loud one keeps others from fishing by them. Funny!I run a Honda with my shack and try to set up away from others. This way if someone comes close they know what they are getting into. Also I put a 1/2" thick piece of rubber under the generator to keep the vibration (either in the truck or on the ice) down. Most of the time it is in the truck with the tail gate up.The rubber is excess from the snow plow deflectors i have to cut off. It helps quite a bit on the vibration. Of course dont run them prime time, unless you feel like taking a swim. Run them after the morning bite shuts down and bump it again before the evening bite gets rolling. Iambjm
I have a small box I built out of wood to set mine on, then go to the big box M store and buy some of those foam mats that fit together like a puzzle. Like others have said run it midday for a couple of hours unless you are using it to run TV's and such. Then you will have to run it at different times. Yes they can be annoying, but so are snowmobiles racing around all day and night.
walleye977
That's true it is quiter then the sleds running around the lake rapping there pipes
choppermn27
Why couldn't you build an insulated box for it.Just put hinges on the top and 1 side and line the box with hard foam.It could still sit in truck and the box would also hide it from thieves and protect it during travel. All you would need is an exaust port and cord port. You could even baffle the port and quiet it even more. Also why not throw a muffler on it? They make lawn tractor mufflers or snowmobile mufflers. How hard can this be its a tube with baffles in I as long as pipe is the same size it would work.I wish I had a generator but am lucky to have a perm at all. BigDogRob
I threw mine in my truck box last year on LOW. never had any complaints, although I don't think I would put mine on the ice to run it. I also have a tonneau cover on my truck and had it rolled up most of the way. seemed pretty quiet outside and could barely hear it in the house. Boar
Funnu thing about LOW, you can be the only sole out ther an people just have to drop down withing 20 yards of ya, if ya hve a generator outside it genrally keeps them away, plan on running mine mornign an evening never had a problem with the bite, 32 ft an three of it ice an two more of snow on a trailer or pick up or even on the ice, a constant noise wont bother fish but irregular or intermitant noises do., ever caught fish while the motor is idleing on your boat or trolling. I got more issues with a sled running by at 60 mph with in 20 yards of my house than I do with some one running a generator trying to make his ice time a little more enjoyable. hawkeye43
If your using a generator to charge a battery, why do it at night?? wouldn't charge them during the day and shut the generator off at night. if the battery can't go more then a couple of hours without charging then you need more battery power, right. gopher_nation
Up on Mille Lacs we just bring a 150' cord and place the generator on top of the spare tire as far away as we can. It's a really loud cheap-o generator and the tire gets it off the ice. Just put an orange cone with reflector next to it so nobody hits it at night. It does suck running outside 150' on cold windy nights to refill it but it sure makes a difference as far as watching tv or listening to the stereo inside the house. The volume used to have to be so high we couldn't hear our rattle wheels going or hear the oven beep when our pizza was done. The loud generator actually led to a few burned pizzas, and even Heggie's tastes bad when burned. We never caught fish in the house at night with it running nearby, now with it 150' feet away we usually catch em all night long.
laker1
Many times on Mille lacs or other lakes I have heard loud generators, and nobody goes out on the lake to hear that. Some people try to muff it with a vented box that won't overheat etc.. Somebody must know the logistics on doing it correctly.
shizzy
also keep in mind that a large portion of the noise does come from the intake. I once worked for a guy who installed a glass pack muffler on the intake of his air compressor and you could still talk to a customer on the phone with the compressor running 20 feet away. it was still noisy, but much quieter. bee
Cheap generators make noise. Simple as that.
Hawg
Even simpler-cheap generators shouldn't be on the lake anywhere near other people.
aanderud
Even simpler-cheap generators shouldn't be on the lake anywhere near other people. Many people who would say the same about expensive generators. Or what about the other loud things? Snowmobiles. Or cars/trucks driving on/off the ice. Or even gas augers. Boar
An dont forget if you had to chip open a spear hole, THOOMB THOOMB THOOMB! Machines that offer easy an convienence shouldnt be allowd on the ice either. LOW has nothing but the constant sound of augers an sleds n track vehicles an generators resorts running plows an moving shakes, dang it, that stuff ruins it for everyone. CANOPY SAM
This is an interesting topic, and it's given me a few ideas. Going to talk with a few engineer buddies of mine and see what we can come up with. I have to admit, I have no interest what-so-ever fishing next to anyone who's running a generator all night. I can understand the need to do it. I just find the constant droning noise obnoxious and intrusive. For me, it completely distracts from everything I venture into the outdoors for. Sleds, ATV's, trucks and augers are intermittent, and part of the game. Listening to a four-wheel drive tractor running all night is not. I can smell a money-maker in this! Sutty
To solve this issue go to fleet farm, apply for a credit card, use the 10% off on the honda generator. Use the 50 dollar gift card on some ice fishing stuff. Everybody wins!

tsande00
I get by just fine for weekends out on the lake without a noisy generator. I have a 12v setup in my shack and can run an entire weekend off 2 deep cycles. That includes TV, DVD, coffee, lighting, radio, etc.I don't mind the soft hum of a Honda but man...gotta agree with the others on the noisy cheapos. Nothing ruins a time on the ice more than Johnny Generator who sets up shop next to you and fires up the generator all evening/night long. It's a public space though so we all have to try to respect and tolerate each other.
BigDogRob
Here's another thought... How many people drive truck and love the generator vibe to get to sleep on the lake? I would think it would help those who find it hard to get to sleep from it being too quiet. I'm just wondering if I buy a converter/inverter or whatever so I can run my TV how much juice will it use in a weekend?
