I talked to a guy who was out on lakes near cambridge yesterday.... 3 inches of ice with slush and snow over the top... It is a mess yet.

I will go out on 3 inches of clear ice when it is cold, but not when there are several inches of snow on top of it...

I am going to check some lakes tomorrow.

We just got back last night from cass, 8" ice 2" snow with more snow today coming. The lake was froze over and making good ice every night.

The fish really started moving Thursday and Friday. We got fish to eat and fish to come home with. Never saw a big fish but did get fish from 26 to 33, lot of perch which is always good eating. Some guys are staying until Tuesday so we see how they do. We are getting rain right now at home which is never good the middle of Dec. I pray we are not going to have a winter like last year.

We are getting rain at my place right now.

I think it was three years ago that we got snow right away when there wasnt enough ice. Lakes got rutted up real bad. Then we got some rain and knocked it down and we had good ice. Hope maybe that happens again.

Whitefish

We got about 2" of snow out of this last storm, however we got a fair amount of rain too.

So most everything is flooding now, which in the long run is good, we had roughly 4" of snow on top of the ice from the previous storm, so now all the snow has gotten wet, so it should freeze clean thru now. however it won't be real good ice.

Was out Friday and Saturday on the chain.

You will have to be very carefull of where you go, I had anywhere from 5" to 1-1/2", seemed like if you could get by a crack that flooded and froze it was good ice, but you get out in the snow the ice was very thin. I could not get to where I wanted to go, stayed in the bays. but literaly had to check ice every 10 feet or so, it changed that quick. Now with the flooding I would not recomend travel of any sorts out there until if freezes back up.

Was standing on 5" of ice, and just a reach away into the snow drift it was 1-1/2", so head out in pairs, have ice picks, and know exactly where your going.

We got 3.5" of ice on tetonka, too much cracking when walking for me. I am waiting until Wednesday to put the spear house out. I know behindthehead won't be going, I still have his spear from up north. Anyone need a nice spear????

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
