ICE 55 Owners

I have a Ice-45... I know it's not what you are requesting. BUT, I would buy it again in a heartbeat. I've owned every brand out there. And so far my favorite is my Humminbird Ice-45. Not sure what the big difference is between the 45 and the 55, but I love the center LCD readout of the depth, love the big display, and the unit itself just looks sweet smile

Like Jim I have the 45.

Would I buy again.........heck yeah!

The are reasonably inexpensive, and are just as capable as their counterparts.

The best thing about them is they play well with others.

I've been in many a fish house and played the interference game with opposing Vexilars (you know when your buddies aren't looking and you hit the IR button to get a better reading smile and theirs turns worse than yours was grin )

With the Bird's that is all but eliminated! Let them fight over interference while you see none at all laugh

I run a 55 Bird and most times when I do I have Jr along and run a LX5 too.

Guess what, you won't have to monkey around knocking off interference with eihter unit.

Yes I'll always run a 55 Bird with a Marcum or Vex.

Would I buy a 55 as a stand alone sounder, maybe.

I sold my Vex FL18 to buy my Ice 55, and I would do it again. Main reason? Everytime I got around someone with a Marcum I couldn't use the FL18, too much interference. Because the Ice55 is on a different frequency it's no problem now. Plus I really like the adjustable zoom versus just the bottom 6 foot zoom of the Vex. I love the flat screen and the ability to have it hooked up to a charger while I am using it. The cord support stinks and I don't use it.

I own a Ice 55 and a few Marcum. As stated above, great for non interference, would I buy another, likely not, I just prefer the Marcum and their product offering now, makes the neat features of the Ice 55 "just another in the game".

If someone gave me $500 to go out and buy my flasher of choice it would probably be the 55, only because up to this point it has been my favorite. Keep in mind I haven’t used any of the new software driven Marcums or anything more than an FL8 from Vexilar. But after using them both extensively, if you put a 55 and an LX5 in front of me and said pick one, I would probably grab the 55.

Why?

My personal preference is that I like the large display with the flat screen, I like the digital readout, and I like the convenience of the zoom, and the different color palettes are a nice change of pace sometimes. Sure on a rare occasion the display will bug out like some sort of glitch but that is minor to me. I do know that I never had to thaw the transducer from its holder before I could fish. smile

Flasher wars are funny and you really can’t go wrong with any of them. In fact I think I might sell the 55 and try something new this year. Perhaps an FL22.

care to elaborate?

I got mine the first year they came out I believe and had the same problems as many others did at the time. At times the unit wouldn't even pick up the jig/bait and also problems with line separation etc. I think those issues have all been resolved and most people seem happy with them now. I went with the FL-20 after using an FL-8 for years prior, Vex just seems to work for me which is what it comes down to in the end.

If you are looking for a showdown let me know. I have a Showdown dual beam that i bought last year and used 3 times. It works fine and I like it better than a flasher but want to get a lowrance Elite 5 Ice machine.

I love the large displace of the 55. The digital read out is nice when checking depths to take guess work out of it. Initially I did not like the zoom as I had fished with a split screen zoom so long, but now that I am used to it I actually like it better as you have a larger window on the entire water column mainly cause of the larger screen. I would be very interested in the newer Marcums as well but since I have never used on of those yet the 55 would still be my choice. For the price you get the same features than more expensive units of the other two main brands. That said I own one of every brand but my unit that I use is the bird. The others are older units that friends use when they come with.
