Gas treatments for Boat Gas.

Anybody have any successful experiences with using various gas treatments rather then buying non-oxigatnated fuel? I have a 115 HP Johnson and it definately runs better on non-oxiginated but not always available and you also pay a good $0.50 more per gallon.

I never buy non oxy gas and treat the cheap stuff I have with either Stabil or Mercury #1 fuel treatment. I've been doing it this way forever in all of my gas powered equipment and the only thing that has happened to me is on my 14 year old gas powered weed wacker, I had an o-ring get eaten/wear away so it would leak fuel.

I would first ask what you are trying to improve or prevent. A lot of guys throw in products like sea foam to fight the ethanol in the gas because of the notion it attracts water and spoils but seas foam itself has alcohol in it.

Most of the additives are largely mineral spirits, naptha or other petroleum products that are basically cleaning agents and do nothing to counter any issues involving ethanol and it's interaction with water. You could go to a paint store or Menards and get the ingredients to mix your own and save a large amount of money but you still won't be solving the ethanol issue. However they certainly may clean the carb and help it run better that way.

I don't seem to have problems with ethanol gas in my boat engine. Just don't leave the fuel sit around. None of stuff intended to put in cars, boats, motorcycles, etc. lasts very long these days.

Burn it up, Stabil (et al) for storage, that's it.

That's true, but then the case is for Stabil (et al), not necessarily oxy vs. non-oxy.

I run a Yamaha product in my 4 stroke to cut down on the carbon and it helps some other things.

Guy that does my outboard work suggested I use it.

I put 1 small bottle into a full tank of gas. Just cannot remember the whole name. I use to use Sta-Bil but now just this Yamaha product.

It goes a lot farther than anticipated.

Because of this I use non-oxy and seafoam.

I have a 95 Merc and the manual calls for mid grade gas up to 10% ethanol, I follow that religiously and add regular red sta-bil at the storage rate to every bit of gas I use. I have never had a problem doing that so I guess I will continue.

I must be doing something wrong, I think I've gone through about 300 gallons of fuel since the middle of March so far this year.

I will add to my first post, that if the fuel is going to sit in the tank for more than two weeks, it gets treated, but if I am going to burn it quickly I do not treat it.

I use very little gas on the metro lakes. There just isn't room to run. I last filled it up on Mille Lacs and ran 10 miles each direction one day. Other than that, it's 1 mile at a time in the metro. Maybe using a gallon a trip if I get crazy and hit multiple spots.

That could be it A 25 mile day on the water is not that uncommon for me. I think my boat gets more water miles put on it than alot of people boat trailers get on the road in a year!

Yamaha Ring-Free Plus.....I use it religiously as well. 1oz / 10 gallons. (Rarely run non-oxy) Ring-free protects fuel systems from ethanol fuel corrosion and removes carbon depoits (no stabilizer qualities). Occasionally, I use same ratio of Stabil blue (marine) if boat is gonna sit for a while (not often). I'm well over 150 gallons this year. Knock on wood...no issues with gas / injectors / filters,/ et...

My 9.9 Evinrude is a prude on gas. I fish the local metro lakes and rivers 2-3 times a week and have always filled my 6 gallon tank about once a year. I do buy non-oxy and add Blue Stabil, so far it starts every time on the 2nd or 3rd pull.

What is 'Blue Stabil'? The stabil that I've always bought has always been red??

Blue Stabil is their marine formula. I believe it's more concentrated than the traditional red version.

Gas is gas, why would you need a marine formula?

All you need is Sea Foam for all you gas needs.

They reasoning behind the marine forumula is the oil mixture but I'm not sold on it. and all I have ever used is Sea Foam

Outboards aren't automobile engines.

The "marine" stabil is also designed to remove water from ethanol. Use non-oxygenated fuel with no ethanol and you dont need to worry about it. Ill 2nd the use of Ring-Free. 1 oz. per 10 gallons. I never go without it. 2005 yamaha 60 and Ive never had to do anything but change oil/gear lube.
